Walmart will no longer keep "multicultural" personal care products marketed to African Americans locked up in glass cases in stores, a practice that has long made the giant retailer the target of criticism and a discrimination lawsuit.
The company on Wednesday said about a dozen of its 4,700 stores nationwide placed multicultural hair care and beauty products under lock and key.
Were sensitive to the issue and understand the concerns raised by our customers and members of the community, Walmart said in a statement.
Walmart had previously defended the policy, saying the decision on which products should be secured is left up to individual store managers. Certain items are kept locked up because they are more likely to be stolen. The reversal comes after millions of Americans gathered in cities large and small in recent days to denounce police brutality and racial bias in response to the Memorial Day death of George Floyd, a 46-year-old black man in Minneapolis, who was pinned to the ground by officers after being accused of passing a fake $20 bill at a grocery.

What they mean by 'multicultural' is largely African American.

(12,463 posts)Must have a decent manager because I use some products in the "multicultural" section I use myself and I am mostly white.
It could be the manager is decent or it could be because this is suburbia

(1,639 posts)a living wage. I just read that the Walton family that owns Walmart is worth $190 billion. When I worked there less than ten years ago, they paid people $8 and hour, which wasn't a living wage then.

(68,556 posts)i rarely shop at Walmart as there is not one close to me but they do have gluten free products I can't get anywhere else. And they pay better than Aldi's too. They have improved while other companies like Starbucks are given a pass...my future daughter in law works there and is paid $9.25 and hour and she is never allowed to work full time...none of them are. She can't afford their insurance so is on Medicaid...smart girl with a college degree but can't find a well paying job. She was hoping to move up but it seems they don't do that anymore.

(10,188 posts)Its a western dept store. They were under lock and key and I had to pick the stuff up at customer service desk as I was checking out. Id never run into that before. All I could think is there were a lot of homeless in the area, but it isnt even expensive items. I pictured some homeless guy changing his socks and underwear in the store bathroom, if they even had one.
