Are there any other holidays in June to get in the way?
Juneteenth definitely needs to become a national holiday.

The argument would surely be made that one of those would have to go to make "room" for it.

African American history and culture. Festivals, parades, cookouts, great food and music. Could be wonderful. I’ll make the suggestion to CBC. It would take many years.

Although my ancestors didn't hit these shores until 15 or 20 years after the Civil War, as a (very) white person, I don't think my heritage should allow me to celebrate it.

Now, if you're talking about a national holiday for every other non-white ethnicity, a day when you all watch white people work while you take it easy (and get paid for it), I think I could get behind that.

Maybe not. National holidays are not to be taken lightly. And keep in mind that a LOT of people will not get the day off. And even those that will get the day off, will probably need to trade away another holiday.

So, let's see. I get New Year's Day. That's in January. President's Day in February. It's a long haul until Memorial Day at the end of May. Then Juneteenth in June. Fourth of July on that date. Labor Day in early September. Columbus Day, hooray! in October. Thanksgiving, which is for a lot of people both Thursday and Friday, unless you have the bad luck to work in retail, and then you might well be working Thanksgiving Day itself. And not for overtime wages, oh, no. Just your normal minimum wage. Finally, Christmas Day, December 25th. Again, unless you work retail. Because, so okay, you might actually have the 25th itself off, but the next day you'll be at the store dealing with the hordes who are returning unwanted items. Sigh.

True story here. My older son got a Christmas job at a local store in the mall a mile from where we lived. He had a WONDERFUL manager who understood his limitations and employed him anyway. About 8 am on December 26th we got a phone call from an assistant manager asking if Son could come in to work, even though he was not scheduled. They had a line outside the door already. I told him to say Yes and drove him up to the Mall, explaining that he needed to do this, and he could probably ask for another day off in the near future. This was nearly 30 years ago. I think he stayed with that job to the middle of January.

But since millions are forced to work any given holiday, it's moot to me anyway.

Goths and metalheads. They like me love Halloween. Goth, punk and metal any race is accepted, goth is for anyone who gravitates to the darkness and mysterious.

Son and tons of nieces and nephews..I couldn’t characterize any of them or their friends as goth, punks, etc. where do you live??? Halloween is not a black thing. We just don’t have time for that. Just saying

We've always have Juneteenth celebrations in Texas, but I never heard of it until I came here.

I would much rather Sept 22nd, be recognized because it is the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Or April 9, the date that Lee surrendered. Or the proclamation of 13th Amendment which officially ended slavery in the rest of the United States to include Missouri, Maryland, West Virginia, Kentucky and Tennessee on December 18, 1865.

Juneteenth, is a bit of a folk holiday due to the fact that Texas was this rogue state that didn't get the memo that the Civil War was over until June 19, 1965.

Sure it's a cool holiday, but it's part of a story. The story needs to be told and it's a cool story. But part of the story is that Texas was a rogue, holdout state that didn't believe in the federal government.
