The Dukes of Hazzard has been flagged for internal review at Amazon. The hit 1980s sitcom could end up getting the boot for problematic imagery. The series aired on CBS for 7 seasons and was a success for most of that time, thanks to the adventures of Bo and Luke Duke, along with their cousin Daisy Duke. Concerns over the show's use of the Confederate flag on the iconic vehicle, nicknamed the General Lee, have come up more than once over the past few years, but it looks like now may be the time the boys get cancelled.
Amazon is currently discussing whether or not to remove The Dukes of Hazzard from their streaming service amid the Black Lives Matter protests currently going on around the world. The Confederate flag is a symbol of racism and oppression and has slowly been phased out of public places all over the United States in recent years. NASCAR just made the decision to stop waving the flag at all of their races, which has received mixed reactions over the past few days.

Can't believe anyone still actually watches this ridiculous, offensive show.

(32,820 posts)She would always say, "Duke's Hazzard, mommy," and I would turn it on for her. I thought it was a stupid show, but I let her watch it.
She was interested in the silly action, and the symbols went over her head. If she had been older, we would have discussed the symbols.
I am sure I will get replies telling me I am a bad mom. Fire away.

(6,499 posts)It was a pretty well-rated show at the time after all.
Every teenage boy had a poster of Barbara Bach on their wall.
It was basically a hicks version of Knight Rider. Lots of amusing car chases and caricatures of southern lifestyle. Hell, you'd think southerners would be the ones offended by it.

(247 posts)It was like that with the flag and good ole boys. We dont have to hide the truth. Not the same at all as that flag being revered today. Also lets not wipe the history away. New generation must see how bad some things were. By doing away with the current nuances of racism they will be able to see the differences. We never want the history white washed. Idiots are already trying to say slavery wasnt all bad.

(21,625 posts)The show wasn't purposely offensive, it's just very dated.
Aristus
(71,868 posts)What did the flag represent before that? Biscuits and gravy? Hot humid summers? Cicadas?
Nah. The flag has always been about white supremacy and the celebration of the institution of slavery.

(21,625 posts)My family and I are true NYers. I watched that show when I was like 8, and asked my mom what was that flag and why did they have it on their car. She just said something like, "oh, that just means they are proud of the South and being Southern." A lot of non-Southerners had that view at the time (1979 or so).
If she were alive today, I'm sure my mother would have had a different answer, such as "that flag means you're racist." But unfortunately many of us were clueless at the time of that show, probably the producers as well.
Aristus
(71,868 posts)It would be weird for someone to fly the Nazi flag and say it was just because they were proud to be German. And I can't imagine anyone actually offering that as an explanation.
I'm Southern born and raised. Never once did my family of proud Kennedy liberals tell me that that flag was about being proud to be Southern.
In fact, being proud of being Southern isn't something that we talked about much growing up. It seems to be an affliction of believers in the "Lost Cause" myth, instead.
obamanut2012
(29,243 posts)Also Southern, also liberal with your same experiences.
obamanut2012
(29,243 posts)And why stands for it. You may say this to ease your conscience over your (hopefully) former beliefs, but people have known what this piece of shit flag stands for since the 1860s. Period.
"Non-Southerners" also have ALWAYS known what that piece of shit flag stands for, and have used it as a cudgel against those oppressed as much as anyone in the South. Hell, when I'm up nNorth, I see it more than I do where I live.

(29,243 posts)JFC just keep twisting yourself.
Just saw it sucked, we should have known better, and now we do.
The fucking car was named the General Lee, and played the defacto national anthem of the CSA, an anthem that lauded how much those slaves just loooooved living in the Southland and helping Massa, because them slaves just loooooved being enslaved and having their children sold and beaten and raped by Massa so much.
Imagine a show in Germany where the iconic car in the show was named the General Himmler, and its horn played the Horst Wessel Lied.
It is LITERALLY THE SAME THING
Polybius
(21,625 posts)Himmler murdered far more innocent people, and did it in a way that was beyond sick. He tortured people for fun. He was definitely worse.

It was always a very curious thing to me, suffering through my grade school history lessons, that my family had no Civil War history even though all my ancestors were already here in the U.S.A..
What's this? No Union Army heroes???
Apparently my ancestors didn't come to the U.S.A. for the "opportunities." They just didn't want to die for their religious and political beliefs in Europe or America.
My last immigrant ancestor was a mail order bride to Salt Lake City. She didn't like sharing a husband so she ran off with a handsome monogamous government surveyor and they lived happily ever after on their Wild West homestead.
One of my grandfathers was an Army Air Corp officer in World War II. He thought that a just war by his understanding of Christianity. My other grandfather was a Conscientious Objector by his understanding of Christianity, which was a radical thing. He chose to build and repair Liberty and Victory ships, but he wouldn't touch arms.
My dad, and my wife's dad both served in the military during the Korean War, but it was just the luck of the draw they didn't see active duty in Korea. My dad was a nearsighted Army medical clerk like Radar O'Reilly and my father-in-law was a Navy hospital corpsman assigned to the Marines.

Nevertheless, I still blamed Reagan. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
