New York and Chicago, which saw a surge of coronavirus cases at the start of the pandemic, are experiencing a decline in cases and have begun reopening in phases.
But that trend doesn't hold throughout the rest of the country.
Soaring case numbers in Arizona have diverted lawmakers' attention from protests after the death of George Floyd back to the public health crisis.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., has asked for members of the administration's Coronavirus Task Force, specifically naming Anthony Fauci andDeborah Birx, to conduct a briefing for Democratic senators next week on the spike in cases in Arizona and elsewhere across the U.S., according to his office.
Other states seeing a sudden spike in COVID-19 cases include South Carolina, Florida, Alaska, Arkansas, California, Kentucky, New Mexico, North Carolina, Mississippi, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas, Utah and Puerto Rico.
Though experts aren't exactly sure why these states are experiencing an unexpected uptick in cases, they said lifting lockdown restrictions, isolated outbreaks and the virus catching up to communities previously not impacted may each play a role.

(12,286 posts)Mask usage has plummeted too.
In Oklahoma City it was about 90% a month ago and maybe 25% now, based upon the admittedly limited observations of me and my circle of friends who have a group text thread on Covid.
Our first day over 200.
The trend lines are headed in the wrong direction here that's for sure.

(16,685 posts)People think it's over and are returning to business as usual as if nothing's wrong. They don't wear masks, they don't follow distancing guidelines, and businesses do little to enforce any of it.

(14,337 posts)nobody will ever know how many family members not living in same household and friends have been getting together, including crossing state lines to see each other.
No way to enforce this. Local police driving around counting cars in driveways? Not talking about BIG Parties.

(16,858 posts)People largely aren't wearing masks, they're going about life as usual, many people in our area believe the virus was overblown despite the fact that our community hospital was damn near overrun with cases, and these thoughts are being sold by Trump and his propagandists. People here seem to be content with ignoring the reality that we are facing and it's frightening.

(10,828 posts)Too many simply do not take the virus seriously. Therefore, there's a very haphazard, varied manner in which people have reacted to any and all precautions.
Today was a case in point. Dropped my car off for a maintenance inspection, something that was overdue, scheduled in March. I went in fully masked and gloved but no one from the sign-in agents to the salespeople to the techs were masked. On the way home, I stopped at the Agriculture Feed Store. You can't even get into the place without a mask. So, from one extreme to the other.
Meanwhile, our local high school football team has been quarantined when a half-dozen plus members tested positive for Covid. That means the team, the coaches, their families and anyone associated with the team members have been exposed and could be infected.
Yet too many people shrug and act like nothing's different while the number of cases down here tick up.
The mentality appears to be: If it's not happening to me, it's not happening.
