Tom Cotton Accidentally Gives The Washington Monument An Awesome New Name

Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) accidentally gave the Washington Monument a sarcastic new nickname ― and some people are hoping it’ll stick.

Cotton, who made headlines last week with a call to send the U.S. military into American cities, decried the cancellation of the TV show “Cops” and other elements of “cancel culture.” He warned that the “woke mob” could be “coming for any one of you.”

Then he predicted that cancel culture would come to Washington.

“Are we going to tear the Washington Monument down?” Cotton asked. “Are we going to rename it the Obelisk of Wokeness?”

On Twitter, the answer was a resounding yes:

Or has he just always been oblivious to the issues of the day? After all he keeps saying, "Ils sont fous ces romains" ("These Romans are crazy!&quot .

Hmmm - that has a ring to it - Oblivious Obelix!

But there isn't a Dem running against him. One person filed to run right before the deadline, and then decided to quit right after the deadline. We will have another 6 years of Tom Cotton.

It should be renamed, perhaps, to evoke a symbol that stands for the premise that black lives TRULY matter.

We don’t have to condone everything people did but throwing everything out? Are you sure that if you had been a wealthy land owner back then you wouldn’t have had slaves?

for very good reasons. Taxation to fill the king’s coffers being one of them. He, as well as ALL the founding fathers fought for a whole new idea for a country for the times. A Democratic Republic.

Being a colony of the British Crown wasn’t all that popular.

Lee fought to break up a country. To destroy it.

The Confederate States of America. But he lost. If Washington lost he and many others would have been hanged. Lee should have been hanged along with many others.

was that George Washington was much more than a slave owner, and though that is shameful, there is much more to the man which we, as a country benefitted greatly.

Going after Confederate generals is probably rather safe, but going after Founding Fathers, no matter how flawed they are is dangerous in an election year.

37. So, what are they going to rename

Washington State to? I guess "Columbia" (an early suggested name for the state, because of the river) is completely out.

In another twenty years, when it's politically incorrect to feel anything but extreme comfort about equal marriage, I guess they'll have to tear down a lot more statues of 20th Century leaders who expressed reservations about being gay or lesbian.

Ah, what fun it is to judge 18th Century people by 21st Century standards.

His Bible redaction, the Declaration of Independence, the UV Campus, Monticello.

I cannot resolve these contradictions, but I'm not ready to dismantle the Jefferson Monument. We have to find a way through the contradictions.

He was a racist slave owner AND a founding father who contributed intellectual rigor to our nation's ideals and my understanding of Jesus of Nazareth.

It's a contradiction.
