(58,785 posts)the real possibility of planetwide depression. European nations are already so economically devastated that they're headed for possibly SEVERAL PERCENTAGE POINTS OF NEGATIVE GDP. And under dreadful leadership, we're headed that way also.
It wouldn't be a bad thing to have a plan to grow veggies in the yards, just in case it becomes necessary. Maybe invest in a couple or few good-sized fruit trees now. They're always nice to have, even if it's just to enjoy the flowers and later the birds as they come monitor the fruit for readiness.

(86,534 posts)I have a shared garden with the landlady and we have enough potatoes, tomatoes, onions, carrots, beets And other stuff growing and some items are already at the let's start eating that stage like spinach and cilantro. Strawberries come next and maybe raspberries this year. And anything we have too much of that won't store, we can trade fr stuff we didn't grow.

(58,785 posts)Not so much our comestibles, limited mostly to herbs and salad greens, and a few fruit trees and shrubs the birds mostly long ago learned to consider theirs.
For trading from our household, I typically lay in a lot of salt in my basement pantry (very cheap. lasts forever, vital to life, and I can always use it eventually for lots of necessary things); ibuprofen, which my husband and I both toss down like an after-dinner cocktail; and omeprazole, which I don't use up in the quantities prescribed but would not care to live long without and know some others our age wouldn't either. Also bleach, though it doesn't stay good nearly as long as salt.
What we could use is you down the road. Our friends with the goats and chickens now live on the other side of the county; the rest are as dependent on critical modern systems keeping running smoothly -- and having the money to participate -- as we are.

(35,325 posts)Governor they cut taxes and bankrupt the state. Then when a Democrat finally gets in office and raises taxes to straighten things out he gets voted out for raising taxes.
Ted Strickland was one of the most popular Governors but he got the blame for the Bush recession.
