Why are most white NYPD officers so Republican?

It shouldn't really matter who a police officer is politically, but why are most white NYPD cops Republican? A lot of them are siding with the NYC PBA president Pat Lynch and Giuliani and Kerik over de Blasio and Cuomo.

Why do they all seem to live in Nassau county, not in NYC?

This pisses me off to no end. Police officers should live in the community in which they work. Instead they come to work into a different city and think they are above and better than the city residents.

The police officer salary in NYC is not enough to live there.

Nassau, Suffolk, NYC suburbs where a lot of white cops live, is affluent, and I think that a lot of them get suburban mentality that they bring on the job.

On LI, they get support from Pete King, etc.

media hostility bias ...

It comes with being human.

"Most" in the OP is echoed by "some" later, but even that "some" is just a subset of the officers present, already a subset of the total number of police.

"Most" often means "a few, but the ones that I noticed and got upset at."

Sometimes perceptions are right, sometimes completely wrong, often somewhere in between. It comes with being human.

1. He pushed his "legendary" record of being a tough federal prosecutor, not afraid of Wall Street tycoons or the mob. How could law enforcement not like that? Guys like Giuliani validated their dedication and work.

2. There was a large Giuliani-for-Mayor rally in the summer of that election. Giuliani was going nuts (again) but with a bullhorn. He was yelling/screaming about the contempt that the current mayor, an African-American, (David Dinkins) felt for NYC police. Giuliani got them all whipped up, continually screaming "Bullshit! Bullshit! Bullshit!) Pretty soon, they joined him, yelling and screaming like a hockey game.

That's just a couple of examples why white NYPD officers lean right.

And, just keeping it to Rudy and not going back to stuff Frank Serpico shed light on, or any of the stuff before then...

Let's go to Rudy's unofficial mayoral campaign kickoff, the Sept. 16, 1992 police protest/riot about the Civilian Complaint Review Board:

Rudy’s Racist Rants: An NYPD History Lesson
By Nat Hentoff and Nick Hentoff, July 14, 2016

***
As many as 10,000 demonstrators blocked traffic in downtown Manhattan on Sept. 16, 1992. Reporters and innocent bystanders were violently assaulted by the mob as thousands of dollars in private property was destroyed in multiple acts of vandalism. The protesters stormed up the steps of City Hall, occupying the building. They then streamed onto the Brooklyn Bridge, where they blocked traffic in both directions, jumping on the cars of trapped, terrified motorists. Many of the protestors were carrying guns and openly drinking alcohol.

Yet the uniformed police present did little to stop them. Why? Because the rioters were nearly all white, off‐duty NYPD officers. They were participating in a Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association demonstration against Mayor David Dinkins’ call for a Civilian Complaint Review Board and his creation earlier that year of the Mollen Commission, formed to investigate widespread allegations of misconduct within the NYPD.
***
Newsday reported on other instances of racial abuse. City Councilwoman Una Clarke, a petite black woman, was blocked from crossing Broadway “by a beer‐drinking, off‐duty police officer who said to his sidekick: ‘This n***** says she’s a member of the City Council.’ ”

Mary Pinkett, another black councilwoman, was trapped on the Brooklyn Bridge as her car was rocked back and forth by off‐duty officers. The two elderly passengers in her car were terrified.

Much more at link, don't be put off by it being on the CATO Institute site.

Hudson) or from Long Island which are Republican enclaves. Their outer borough status coming in to police NYC streets galls many of us because they bring (many of them) their white supremacy attitude. We're still trying to get over Stop and Frisk where they'd throw any black man and young kid up against the wall or wherever and search them. Think what it must feel like to be a black professional coming from work and being throw up against a wall and search because "you look suspicious."

True. Residency requirements shouldn't happen in NYC. New York is a big family, but the white NYPD cops don't act like it. Nassau, Suffolk, Staten Island and so on is Trump country. Black and Latinos in NYC don't want to be cops, although they live in the area they patrol unlike their white colleagues.

be cops. These white cops will arrest and put black/latino kids in jail for having a joint, i.e. They would not arrest a white kid for that same action. Consequently, many boys/girls of colors have a record. That can be an impediment to apply to the force. Many kids of color see how the cops operate, they don't trust the cops and therefore would not want to join an organization they don't trust. So to say that black and latino don't want to enter the force is really not that simple. There are impediments to them applying for the force.

They see the worst in people every single day on the job. It's going to profoundly affect them.

In my opinion there are jobs that people should not be allowed to have for more than perhaps 10 years without being required to take a sabbatical. Or to be shifted to a very different set of duties. Police is one such.
