I ask because one should be careful never to let any antibacterial agent get into the septic system. It stops the work of decomposition. But I've figured out the answer myself. Plenty of soap.
The question came to me as I was wiping down the surfaces in our vacation house with Clorox cleaner in preparation for our son's family arriving after we left.

(14,861 posts)He says a cup of bleach in a 12,000 gallon system isn't really going to make any difference. If you spray and wipe the surfaces, the stuff isn't really going down the pipes anyway.

(3,334 posts)We have it cleaned out about every 7 years. 25 years in this house and it still does what it is supposed to. We are careful about what goes down our pipes.

(4,572 posts)Does the septic pumper outer dude check the sludge level? You do not want sludge carrying over into the septic field.

(3,334 posts)We are very careful about what goes down the pipes. We always wipe out any grease before we wash the pots and pans.

(4,572 posts)as the septic process should handle it (at least in normal amounts).
In any case, I let my dog take care of it (one more reason to hav'em around).
Anyhow, if you treat your tank well, there is also no need for additives (and small amounts of disinfectants are OK).
