(21,784 posts). . .so they have a more positive connection with everyday civilians and regard themselves more as keepers of the peace than as regular soldiers.
Case in point: when my city north of NYC was hit with an initial outbreak of COVID-19, we had the nearby New York 369th division of the NG (aka The Harlem Hellfighters) available to aid in the deep cleaning of public buildings, transport to the hospitals and distribution of food and other necessities to people in affected neighborhoods and institutional facilities, ie. senior centers and assisted living centers when their supply chains were disrupted.

The last thing they are is police,
Plus they are only part time military , most of the time they are your next door neighboor
