I had an epiphany this morning

I realized that my entry into politics was reading Jules Pfeiffer’s comic on Sundays in the Philadelphia Sunday Bulletin. Interestingly, it was not in the comic section but in the Sunday magazine which I believe was called This Week.

Doing some research, I found that he still alive, 91 years old! For those here who had not seen his work, his material was brilliant and I would dare say that he influenced Trudeau in his creation of Doonesbury. Pfeiffer’s art however was much more primitive, and his outlook was somewhat different. He was also regarded as an intellectual, which at that time was not yet considered a denigrating term. He would appear on various interview shows and discuss his mature, progressive, altruistic point of view.

I urge any of you who are interested in satire and comics to find some of his work and take a look. You will not be disappointed.

Btw, a search of videos revealed a bunch of his talks and interviews available on YouTube.

Thanks for the nudge.

Wow, he’s still alive!

I was probably the only 12 year old in my whole school who read and enjoyed Jules Pfeiffer’s cartoons. You are right, you can definitely see his influence on Garry Trudeau.

Now I want to re-read them. (I used to borrow compilations of his work from the public library)

Thanks, PC!

Wow, amazing he is still alive. That's awesome. I will have to do some internetting to remember his work. My entry was watching Walter Cronkite and others on Chicago TV growing up. We got all the news, and when my dad would come home from work (pipefitter superintendent at the Mills), he would sit on the stairs and I would unlace his Redwings and pull them off, then I'd check in his khaki shirt pocket for a stick of Beemans or a Sen-Sen. Then we'd watch the news. I learned how to choose my values, debate with him (age 12) about race, the Israelis, Chicago riots, Vietnam, birth control. Whatever. My god I treasure those days the most of my life.

I was associated with a theatre in the 70s that presented "Feiffer's People", a series of vignettes based on Feiffer's work.

When is his birthday? Could he maybe receive many emails, or something? Jules Pfeiffer has had a huge influence on my life.
