rump says he’ll cut off funding to states that make it easier to vote
President Trump sent two tweets Wednesday morning threatening financial retaliation against states that are trying to make it easier to cast a ballot during the coronavirus pandemic, saying he will “hold up” funds for two swing states encouraging people to vote absentee:

Breaking: Michigan sends absentee ballots to 7.7 million people ahead of Primaries and the General Election. This was done illegally and without authorization by a rogue Secretary of State. I will ask to hold up funding to Michigan if they want to go down this Voter Fraud path!..

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) May 20, 2020

Donald J. Trump

@realDonaldTrump
State of Nevada “thinks” that they can send out illegal vote by mail ballots, creating a great Voter Fraud scenario for the State and the U.S. They can’t! If they do, “I think” I can hold up funds to the State. Sorry, but you must not cheat in elections. @RussVought45 @USTreasury

Many Republicans also vote by mail or vote via absentee ballot. This kind of effort is not going to sit well with them either.

An overwhelming majority of the American people are for this and his retaliation to states that make it easier will hurt him even more. He's self destructing , and knows its harder to rig it if people vote by mail, and have a way to insure its counted . trumps corruption hits a wall now with this. With him getting more and more exposed he may not even make it to the Nov. election, and the GOP may replace him with Mitt. trump's time is coming to an end, and with his freedom soon after he leaves office.

... since mail-in ballots breaks the secrecy clause in our system. We do have a three weeks period prior to the elections, where absentee votes can be given in other ways than on the polling station, but they all include an appointed guard and secured secret ballots in double sealed envelopes.

BUT in a extremely weird country with only two possible parties and public party affiliation, I can see why mail-in ballots could work (and why "politicians" as Trump can be elected).

Though I do not like mail-in ballots, since it makes it too easy that votes can be given under pressure.

There's nothing 'illegal' at the federal level about it in the USA.

Some states just don't do it right now. That's all.

a shocking threat like this can stoke support instead of destroy it. Not as if their adherents had anyone else to vote for, of course, any genuine alternatives eliminated with their cheering support.

Not that Trump's previous BS shouldn't be called out time and again, but at least "way back then" (a bit over three weeks ago) this story seemed to fizzle out as typical Trump bluster with no substance behind it.

Of course, any other President would have been forced to resign for doing just this one thing once, even if it was just mouthing off, but Trump getting away with this shit is the bizarre universe we apparently live in now.
