arry Kudlow, director of the National Economic Council, said Sunday that the $600 checks being sent to Americans on unemployment as part of coronavirus relief efforts are expected to end in July and called them a disincentive for people to get back to work.
The $600 plus-up that's above the state unemployment benefits they will continue to receive is in effect a disincentive. I mean, were paying people not to work. It's better than their salaries would get, Kudlow said on CNNs State of the Union.
That might have worked for the first of couple months. It will end in late July, he added.
Kudlow suggested the additional checks are no longer needed as businesses reopen and unemployment rates fall.
He said the Trump administration is looking at other incentives, including smaller checks that still provide some kind of business for returning to work.
"I think we are on our way. We are reopening, businesses are coming back and therefore jobs are coming back," Kudlow added. "We don't want to interfere with that process."

(736 posts)He "doesn't want to interfere with that process" said the man.
Translation: we just gave trillions to rich people. Now everything goes bankrupt. Things will be bought for pennies on the dollar. Guess what he doesn't want to interfere with.

(24,396 posts)There are 43-million unemployed in this country right now. How many of those does Kudlow expect will be back to their full-time jobs in the next six weeks? How many more will lose their jobs in the next 6 weeks? At the current rate, about 6-million more...which puts us near 50-million unemployed. Exactly how do those people survive when they lose $2400 a month that they are currently receiving from the Feds?
Remember, these are the guys who said one could live for 10 weeks on the $1200 check from the Feds.
The Rs are creating a bullshit story so they can label the 50-million as lazy freeloaders, no matter that their jobs are gone, and gone for the sole reason that tRump fucked up our response to the corona virus. They are trying desperately to absolve him of his responsibility for the economic collapse and the hundreds of thousands of deaths. Hell, they dont even talk about the virus anymore. They act like it doesnt exist.

(36,294 posts)I just looked at my wife's state unemployment file on line and it shows that her $600 weekly payment stops at the end of July but her PUA payment continues to the end of the year. That hasn't changed since she first signed up for unemployment.

(24,396 posts)THAT is the truth the Rs dare not speak - that most Americans are underpaid for the work they do. While the fat cats get fatter based on doing nothing but lining their own pockets, people who do essential work in this country - like grocery workers, nurses et al - are paid shit wages and made to feel like they should be happy they even get the shit wages.
We have been conditioned to believe that we are worthless as individuals in this country. We are cogs in the wheel that produces the wealth that redounds not to the people, but to the military, the big corporations and the rich. We just figure thats how it has to be, BUT THAT ISNT HOW IT HAS TO BE! Why shouldnt the average American be getting $2000-3000 a month from the government? Why must that money go to the military and the fat cats? Why?
Kudlow realizes that giving the average Joe a taste of the financial security that HE and other DC pols enjoy may well lead to pitchforks and torches in the streets. Better to keep the average person down than to give them a glimpse of what even a few extra bucks per month in their pockets can do for them.

(68,555 posts)be spent...the economy will collapse. It will be worse than 08...much worse. These dolts in Trumpland seem to believe their own propaganda...that somehow the market equals the economy...is getting better. But the market will tank as well if the $600.00 is not continued until jobs are truly available.

(24,396 posts)The fact that the money is going directly to individuals speaks only to the delivery system for getting that money into the economy, not to any possible side effect of a disincentive being produced as a side effect.
Indeed, one could argue that any disincentive is a PLUS, as it means people will continue to have ready funds to pump back into the economy, rather than going broke and putting even more strain on the system. People lose their incomes, their homes, their savings and crime goes up. What does it cost the state to incarcerate a prisoner for a week? In CA, its around $1250.

(14,490 posts)especially for people who are high risk. Families with high medical costs or paying a mortgage may need that money to survive.
No one should be listening to Kudlow's opinions about anything. Like most of the tRump administration, he is not qualified to make such statements.
That is, unless you believe a degree in history is adequate training to be an economic advisor to the President....
