With Tommy Tubberville running as a MAGA Republican, Dabo Swinney not firing an assistant coach for using the n-word, and Mike Gundy supporting a racist news station....I wish that these black athletes would start going to HBCUs
These white coaches dont care anything about these black players, and these players are making them rich

(945 posts)...if they actually started attending the HBCUs. Then again, seems like some of the players may rather workout in less-than-state of the art facilities if it means not supporting institutions that may harbor elements that could lead to them being killed.
Frankly, I would rather the PWI change, though. Black people pay taxes to keep PWI's open. I think the athletes have every right to expect to feel safe and respected.

Ironically a lot of HBCUs have majority white baseball teams. Not many Black kids play high school baseball so there aren't many for the HBCUs to recruit.

(7,365 posts)Are trying to make a life for themselves and for some the NFL is that life. They choose these schools after careful deliberation with the knowledge that the school of choice is their best shot at realizing their dream, whether they play for a right wing knuckle dragger or not. It's really hard to transfer and could put the player behind. I hold no ill will toward the kids who are locked in, but for future recruits...BUYER BEWARE!!!

(4,167 posts)Thats why it would be hard to do in football, but easy for too basketball recruits where they dont really need the top notch facilities with strength and conditioning...most elite basketball recruits are already NBA ready

(7,365 posts)For hoops, ELITE recruits are ready, but don't forget those kids just under that level, those players who have all the potential in the world for an NBA career, but (unlike Lebron and Kobes of the world) requires some seasoning in college. Even if those kids transfer they have to sit a year, unless the previous school releases them from the commitment. Very few hoops players take this route and a great one would probably play for a right wing asshole as long as he was a good coach.
Also, college football players can not declare hardship until their graduating class are Juniors (I think), so the football player HAS to do something for 2 years. The hoops player can go straight to the league if he's good enough. Zion was good enough but he decided to give Duke one year and he was gawn.

(31,261 posts)USC and UCLA send tons of players to the NFL. Cal and The University of Washington also. All of those schools were integrated and fielded integrated teams years before the SEC took Black players. The top kids should go to the PAC 12, the Big 10 or the Big East and avoid the SEC and ACC. If that happens, you will see change happen fast.

(10,303 posts)NC A&T (Go Aggies) recently left the MEAC to go to the Big South conference (some see this as a step up) effective for the fall of 2021. A&T were good in basketball many many years ago but the local powerhouses for basketball here are UNC Chapel Hill, NC State, Duke and Wake Forest.
If I were a basketball athlete (which I definitely am not btw) and I was offered a full scholarship to both A&T and Duke I'd probably take the Duke scholarship on the basis that it would get me more exposure and a better path to the NBA.
Now if I were a football athlete (again, definitely not me) and I had a full scholarship to either A&T or UNC Chapel Hill then it might be a tougher call, especially with the move from MEAC to Big South and UNC-CH's bad reputation as of late for cheating.
Point is - depends on the college program, depends on the end goal. HBCUs have some top competing teams but they aren't always the best stepping stone on the way to a career in professional sports.

(31,261 posts)given plenty of state funds, so when integration in college athletics happened, they just sucked up the best athletes from the HBCU's. Remember that most of the Black NFL greats came from HBCU's, including Walter Payton and Jerry Rice.

(6,251 posts)From Sports Illustrated, June 3, 2020 (this is all the text from the article):
The protest was successful and remained peaceful throughout its entirety. West Virginia head football coach Neal Brown joined several of his players at the protest, showing once again that coach Brown is all about having his guys' backs and standing up for what is right.
Others who were in attendance include Dante Stills, Jeff Pooler and from the basketball side Oscar Tshiebwe, Gabe Osabuohien, Larry Harrison, and former Mountaineer John Flowers, per Joe Brocato of MetroNews.

(4,167 posts)But most of the big time successful football coaches always gave me closet racist or at least right wing conservative vibes especially Dabo Swinney.
