Bette Midler: ‘Are Police Departments Magnets for Sadists the Way the Church Was a Magnet for Pedophiles?’

Singer Bette Midler sent out a tweet late on Wednesday asking whether police departments were “magnets for sadists the way the church was a magnet for pedophiles.”

Midler’s tweet forwarded a tweet by Miami Herald investigative reporter Julie K Brown which showed side-by-side photos of 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick kneeling on the sidelines during the national anthem and the Minneapolis police officer kneeling on the neck of George Floyd, who died after repeatedly telling the policeman he could not breath.

“For all those who didn’t get it the first time, the second time, the 20th time…this is not a political issue—it’s a civil rights and human rights issue,” Brown wrote in her tweet.

“Are Police Departments magnets for sadists the way the church was a magnet for pedophiles??” Midler asked in her tweet forwarding Brown’s.

It sure makes it easier for serial killers to do their thing easily.

You just have to be a little patient, but you can just keep on getting the special thrill of murdering people and there is no hassle with disposing of the bodies or spending time finding and stalking victims. The bonus is, you can get away with it over and over with impunity. Perfect!

...there were two cops on the city's police force who had been bullies in high school.

I have suspected for a long time that cops become cops because they like to shove people around, and having a uniform, a gun, a badge and the authority of the state gives them an outlet for those impulses.

Strict male hierarchy, God and/or Law on their side, answerable to no one outside their culture, and secrecy. Toxic masculinity at its finest.

It's past time for a strong dose of sunlight disinfectant.

Religious organizations are waaaaaaayyyy out front when it comes to employing and actively protecting more pedophiles.

She didn’t say ALL or even MOST police are sadists, she asked whether police departments are MAGNETS for sadists, i.e. the kinds of people who could casually shoot another human in the back or choke them to death as they plead for their lives.

Haven't we figured out yet that pedophiles are everywhere they can get easy access to children?

Explosive Report Says USA Swimming Covered Up Hundreds Of Sexual Abuse Cases

The report paints a picture reminiscent of the USA Gymnastics sexual abuse scandal.

A lengthy investigative report from the Southern California News Group ― published Friday at one of the group’s newspapers, the Orange County Register ― says that USA Swimming ignored or covered up hundreds of sexual abuse cases over the course of decades. The report is reminiscent of the recent USA Gymnastics scandal involving former team doctor and convicted pedophile Larry Nassar ― where the people in power cared only about winning and safeguarding the sport’s image, subsequently protecting and enabling an abuser to prey on young athletes.

Citing court documents and internal communications, the SCNG report says USA Swimming enabled hundreds of predators, most of whom were coaches, and allowed a culture of abuse where it was accepted for older coaches to have sexual relationships with underage athletes. The article centers on Chuck Wielgus, the former USA Swimming executive director who died in April of complications from colon cancer.

https://www.wdsu.com/article/boy-scout-lawsuit-alleged-abuse-cover-up/30391908#

The complaint accuses the Boy Scouts of America of “rampant sexual abuse at the hands of BSA scoutmasters and other scout leaders” and “efforts to cover up the extensive evidence in its files documenting that abuse.”

“BSA created, maintained, and promoted programs that attracted pedophiles by the tens of thousands and gave these predators unsupervised access, and therefore opportunities, to prey on boys who had been entrusted to BSA’s custody and care,” the lawsuit alleges. “BSA’s programs were tailor-made for pedophiles to forge trusting relationships with boys of their desired age ranges, to exploit their positions of authority and control over the boys to commit horrific acts of sexual abuse, and to discourage boys from reporting that abuse by enforcing BSA’s core values of obedience and loyalty to scout leaders.”

"Haven't we figured out yet that pedophiles are everywhere they can get easy access to children?"

And then you go on to link to reports focusing on gymnastics, swimming and BSA. So which is it .. specific problem organizations .. or "everywhere with access ..?"

(Getting back to the OP .. I think Midler made and off-hand comment that probably doesn't bear up all that well under scrutiny. Meant mostly as humor? But then, heck .. it's Twitter! This is the place where we spitball all kinds of half-assed, and half-baked, ideas!)

I just thought your initial point was that focusing on the Church (or the BSA?) as per Midler's tweet was a disservice to understanding the pervasive nature of the issue. I thought the rest of the post kind of muddied that central theme. But like I said .. your post. And maybe I misunderstood your whole meaning entirely. It happens.

There are four types of people who join the military. For some, it's family trade. Others are patriots, eager to serve. Next you have those who just need a job. Than there's the kind who want the legal means of killing other people (although with the police, this group satisfies their bloodlust by beating the shit out of people).

It doesn't mean all people working with kids are pedophiles, by any means, but just that it would be particularly appealing to those kinds of people.
