why so many ads under postings?

I don't know if this is the appropriate place to post this, so I apologize in advance if I've made a mistake.

I understand the need for links and images that promote other sites as a marketing and possible revenue source, but there seems to be a whole lot more on DU now than I can ever remember before. The scroll to get to comments is unbelievably long. Am I wrong? Has anyone else noticed this?

I couldn't even get to the comments. After I logged in, it was fine.

It is probably just a glitch.

You'll see no ads at all. It's expensive to run a public website. The bills must be paid.

It makes perfect sense and I would come back to DU with or without the long scroll, but now I can enjoy the site more and contribute to its financial health. Thanks!

How Bernie's Small Donors Are Making Credit Card Companies Rich (or any politician)

($12 once is more efficient than $1 twelve times)

Low-dollar, repeat contributions are a great talking point for campaigns. They’ve also resulted in a massive financial windfall for credit card processors.

Using the figures in the article. it would be more generous/efficient to give $9 once than $1 twelve times.

heck and got the problem fixed with the agency that does the ads placement thing on DU pages.

This isn't deliberate. He is well aware that people go through a phase (some longer than others) of being an occasional viewer before going all in to membership. The first impulse of a newcomer to the site and finding it unusable is to go elsewhere, like to JPR (shudder) or Hide5 (the horror, the horror), or tens of thousands of other possibilities. Very few newcomers are going to throw money at it and hope that makes things better. And we benefit from having visitors read progressive viewpoints.

I am a long-time star member, but I just accessed DU via another browser where I'm not logged in, and yes it is essentially unusable.

when they put so many auto-play videos on their home page, my computer couldn't even load it. After several years as one of my favorites, I quit them altogether. They never really responded to my emails on the subject.

Thanks goodness, that was around the time I finally found DU........

Oh! I was reminded by a post up-thread about ad blockers. I recently installed one. So I'm no good as a resource. Looks like you got some good answers.

You shouldn't have to log in to browse. How do you think we get new members? A great way to alienate someone who stumbled onto DU. We would lose them within 2 to 3 clicks.

You shouldn't have to scroll through hundreds of ads to get to the substance of a thread. It makes DU seem like a scam site. It did go away after I logged in.

I don't mind the ads, except I DO mind the ones that pop up in front of the thread. I do occasionally click on an ad, and may even buy something.

I didn't mind the fund drives. I would rather have DU funded that way, over click bait, or posters sporting the gold star indicating teacher's pet.

Ironic. The fund drives were eliminated so we could have ad driven financial support. Now there are so many ads that there are an actual distraction. BUT, I can avoid the ads all together if I become a Gold Star Member (in essence another name for a "fund drive&quot . So fund drives were eliminated so we could have a ton of ads, so a "fund drive" could be instituted to avoid the ads.

Smart. (NOT)

Gold Star. Meh.
