Katie Porter endorses Engel challenger Jamaal Bowman

Last edited Tue Jun 16, 2020, 02:08 PM - Edit history (1)

Rep. Katie Porter (D-Calif.) on Monday endorsed Jamaal Bowman, who is challenging House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Eliot Engel (D-N.Y.), who is in his 16th term in the House, in a June 23 Democratic primary.

“Jamaal Bowman is running for Congress for the same reasons I did — to stand up to special interests and fight for working families. He’ll come to Congress ready to take on corporate executives, not hit them up for donations,” Porter said in a statement Monday. “Our Congress needs new voices like Jamaal’s to push our country forward. As a fellow parent and educator, I am proud to endorse Jamaal. I hope you’ll join me in supporting him in the June 23rd Primary.”

“I am honored to have earned Congresswoman Porter’s support and endorsement,” Bowman said in tweeting out the endorsement.

EDITED: I am removing the commentary I added that resulted in this post being removed in the first place. I appreciate the opportunity to celebrate Rep. Porter's endorsement and find the hypocrisy of Jamaal Bowman's opponent telling. As a former middle school teacher, I welcome Mr. Bowman's influence in our body politic.

Cause wow... "Looks like the supporters of a dictatorship are coming out in full force for this race. Thugs on all sides, I tells ya!"

That seems pretty inflammatory

Rep. Eliot Engel, a New York Democrat, lashed out at Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez over her recent endorsement of his progressive primary opponent, Jamaal Bowman.

Engel, whose primary has become increasingly competitive in recent weeks, called Ocasio-Cortez's public support for his opponent undemocratic.

"We shouldn't have one person, from high, even though she's a colleague of mine, think that she can anoint whoever is elected to Congress," Engel said.

Ocasio-Cortez and other progressives have long argued that robust primaries strengthen democracy and have endorsed candidates running progressive primary bids.

Rep. Eliot Engel, a New York Democrat, on Sunday lashed out at his House colleague Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez over her recent endorsement of his progressive primary opponent, Jamaal Bowman.

Engel, who has represented his Bronx district since 1989 and is facing his toughest primary race in two decades, called Ocasio-Cortez's public support for his opponent undemocratic. Ocasio-Cortez and other progressives have long argued that robust primaries strengthen democracy.

"This is not a dictatorship. This is a democracy," Engel said during a candidate forum on Sunday. "We shouldn't have one person, from high, even though she's a colleague of mine, think that she can anoint whoever is elected to Congress."
