House Democratic leaders are racing ahead with legislation to grant statehood to Washington, D.C., scheduling a June 26 vote on the historic and highly controversial bill, which will arrive amid the heightened calls for black empowerment that have followed the killing of George Floyd in Minnesota.
In February, the House Oversight and Government Reform panel had approved the proposal, marking the first time a D.C. statehood bill had won committee passage since 1993.
Democratic leaders are now seeking to tap into the undercurrent of national unrest that's followed the death of Floyd an unarmed African American man killed last month at the hands of Minneapolis police to pass a series of long sought reforms designed to combat racial disparities across a swath of cultural sectors.
Most immediately, Democrats are seeking to move criminal justice reforms aimed at reining in racial profiling and police brutality, a package also scheduled for a floor vote next week.

(9,263 posts)time spent actually going after the trump admin. Just saying
But it is past time for DC to be a State. We saw how trump tried to make DC his bitch for the photo op, and to run its police force, and inserting national guard troops. If DC had a governor, that wouldn't have happened. As a state, it would also get 2 senators.

(10,533 posts)That is what the right constantly does. We have GOT to start playing the game properly. We can't win if we never even bring up good policy because "it has no chance of passing".

(8,048 posts)The District has more residents than several red states, and yet has no vote in Congress and no power to influence presidential elections.
"Taxation without representation is tyranny." Which means DC residents have been living under tyranny since the inception of the Republic. It's about time this travesty was ended.

"The District has more residents than several red states, and yet has no vote in Congress and no power to influence presidential elections."

(2,672 posts)Totally agree....
it will amazing to watch the dip hole senators from Montana, the Dakota's and Idaho and Wyoming block it, because they don't want to see their power diluted.
A funny lack of awareness from out forefathers

(10,136 posts)New York City, Los Angeles, and Chicago should also be states.
I'd rather see DC reduced to the core Federal buildings around the Capitol and the residential parts ceded back to Maryland.
