Dallas pilot program seeing great success by pairing officers with social workers for 911 calls

(Apologies for the article being in Fox)

DALLAS - The president is expected to sign an executive order on police reform on Tuesday. It will include certifying officers, creating a database to track bad officers and programs pairing officers with social workers.

A pilot program in Dallas has already been teaming officers, paramedics and social workers. Those who are part of the program say it’s working.

The pilot program started in 2018 and was the first of its kind in the state of Texas.

Dallas police officers still respond to the scene for the safety of the team and public. But it's often the social worker who takes on the primary role. The approach to responding to certain 911 shows promise.

Good idea. I hope that no social worker gets shot. Walleye Jun 2020 #2
That's why the social worker is paired with a cop DeminPennswoods Jun 2020 #4

Some of these domestic abuse or loud parties or other situations can turn ugly. With so many guns out there, you just never know. Having the social worker be the primary responder should help calm the situation with the cop there as back up. A side benefit might be cops getting OJT on how to handle these kinds of situations should they encounter one when not with a trained social worker.
