A police officer has been dubbed Officer Karen by the internet after someone posted a video of her crying in her car because she had to wait longer than expected for her McDonalds order and ended up refusing most of it because she was too nervous about it. After being posted by a Trump supporter late Tuesday, the video quickly gained over five million views, with many being baffled by the way it ends.

The officer, identified only as Stacey, tells a story about pulling up to a local McDonalds after her shift and after pre-ordering her food online. After being told to pull up to the final window and having to wait a bit for her food to be cooked, theres a high level of tension where you expect something bad to happen. However, the whole problem seems to be that the likely minimum wage fast-food employees werent fast enough with her food.
And Im waiting, and Im waiting, and Im waiting, and so the girl comes to the window and asks me what my order was. I repeat my order, and they ask me to pull up because my foods not ready. Its an English muffin meal with a hash brown and coffee, she says.
Sounds like she feared for her life here. Good thing she goes around all day with a gun and badge.
I get that she's tired and hungry but she sounds like she's worried someone is going to come by and shoot her like the cops did to Rayshard Brooks.
Edit: changed Karen to Stacey
Second Edit: I've been punked a lot in my life but this isn't one of those times. She's Stacy Talbert of the McIntosh County Sheriff's office

(787 posts)I understand swearing like a sailor might put off some people. So those of us in polite society use; Karen for middle-aged white women of privilege, Stacy for the 20 something that finds life isn't 100% perfect, and Becky for the under 20 that is naive and lived a sheltered life.
So, what shall we call the individual that has a meltdown over life little inconveniences?

(4,131 posts)They simply want to take away a word that has become a tool to label those who exploit their white privilege, often in a racist way.
Now, why they want to make it more difficult to easily call out and label that type of behavior is a mystery to me.

After racial violence in the U.S., writer Karen Attiah re-examines the 'Karen' meme
The Karen memes and jokes arent sexist or racist. Let a Karen explain.
And to invent oppression when none is happening to you? Well, as a Karen, I just have to say that is peak Karen behavior.

(28,817 posts)Your free speech. Have at it.
My free speech can only ask politely for others not to use it as it is offending to many whether you think it or not.
You have a great day.

(28,817 posts)For the record, I dont think its racist. I am not sure I think its sexist but it does malign only women.
However, I offends more than I.
Why use it? As I said. I can only ask politely. Refusal is your gig.
chia
(2,244 posts)to be doing what you accuse me of.
For the record, I don't think I've used the term Karen here, but it doesn't offend me even though I'm a middle-aged white woman. (Although I'm not prone to the behavior most of them have been caught on camera for...)
I'm offering you and anyone else who's interested another view, the insight of a woman who's not only named Karen but is a woman of color all too familiar with oppressive language, and I think her viewpoint is worth considering.
It's just not a hill to die on, particularly not when there are so many other hills to consider.

Theres your free speech again.
Once again Im asking politely. Im not suggesting anyone is dying over a mole hill.
You seem to be making it more than it is.
You want use it use it.
chia
(2,244 posts)I responded to you with another view, which you've shown no indication that you've read or considered, then told me I refused to consider another view.
Yes I have free speech, just as you're using your free speech right now to make the Karen issue larger than it needs to be.
I understand you're asking politely, I also understand you're also continuing your half of this conversation so it seems important to you, important enough to ask other people to accommodate you.
Just offering another view, I'll leave it at that if you'd like.

(2,244 posts)Sorry, this middle-aged white woman will continue to think (and say, when the occasion presents itself) that there are more important things for middle-aged white women to be offended about than whether or not someone should be called a Karen.
You've used the term "dick", it happens to be in the current first post of your journal. That's kind of interesting, all things considered.

(5,225 posts)Where are the symbols on a uniform? Nothing on sleeves to show office. A police officer would not post something on the internet like this that could get her fired. She is not wearing a uniform and that phony radio is so obvious. Good piece of performance art, imho. Plus, does she look 35 or 40 years old? Should if she's been on the job 15 years.

(8,914 posts)I work next to a major hospital in a capital city downtown, we have a waiting room for clients, it's on the first floor, I've had people wander over after they have been discharged, saying they are being followed or just clearly out of it, some with violent mood swings.
We have called the police many times when it was beyond our staffs control to peaceably move them on.
These police officers would talk to them, gently engage them, white, black or hispanic and treat them humanely, sometimes for over an hour, never once did the police get violent in the four years I've worked at this family owned business.
The police need a better way to determine the physiological make up of the new hires, and have evals done during their careers, they have to weed out the bad apples and prevent new bad apples being hired.

(7,294 posts)How does that work? Is it so the food is ready for when you arrive? How is that any faster than the drive thru?
Or, is it for large or complicated orders, so you don't have to try to communicate it through a speaker? In which case, driving through to announce your arrival is when they actually begin prep?
Or, is it for the paranoid who think that if the order-taker can see them, they might adulter their food, for some reason (like being a cop)?
Any thoughts?
IronLionZion
(45,433 posts)There are many reasons why people would use online ordering. It minimizes contact during pickup. It reduces errors in mishearing an order or misspelling a name or something like that. And there is no way they would know who she is or what she looks like if she ordered it online. So it would supposedly reduce any discrimination. This woman believes she's receiving some discrimination for being a cop.
Blue_Adept
(6,399 posts)Particularly since they offer coupons for that.
It's contactless, which is great, especially since no cash handling or handing over my card during these particular days.
I place the order online. When I get to McDonalds, I park in the spots they have for mobile orders. I use the app to denote that I'm there and the numbered spot. They then cook up the food - which is always fast with most drive-thrus - and they bring it out.
Quick and easy. Especially useful when there are a few people in the car placing separate orders on their phones as well. One spot, multiple payments, easy.
