(7,153 posts)The vote was 5-4.
The objection was that the government did not follow the steps that would be required to shut down the program (such as notices in the Federal Register, etc.).
PRETZEL
(3,245 posts)but was Roberts opinion just that the Trump Admin didn't follow the correct procedures or was there more substance to the decision?

(2,970 posts)I see this as the evolution of the Chief Justice, or at least that's what I hope this is. Roberts is turning out better than I expected, to be fair, I expected that absolute worst, but so far, he has surprised me with these hints of conscience and boundaries. I'm more hopeful now about any cases involving Trump; Roberts may actually adjudicate fairly.

(58,785 posts)While there is a conservative majority there will inevitably be big losses, but still. As you say, thank goodness!
Skraxx
(2,970 posts)Not that I expected much, but I am pleasantly surprised. We will lose some big one's, but it seems he is acutely aware of his place in history, and has some moral conscience and boundaries, apparently, and that's a good thing considering any Trump case; I'm having more confidence in Roberts with regard to rulings on Trump.
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)Still, both these recent decisions are big blows to social and/or religious conservatives, not to the goals of economic conservatives.
I haven't been following Roberts. Do we have an idea yet how extreme he might be willing to go to join opinions created by those on the far right? His decision on the ACA was not at all the blow to big business some imagine.
Skraxx
(2,970 posts)And yes, big business is now in favor of ACA, they see it's benefits. So I'm leaning towards another Roberts surprise there. Again, he's acutely aware of his place in history, this is testing his soul, and he feels it, and on the big, social questions, he's so far been doing the right thing. I feel he's truly growing and maturing with his position, it does happen. I do think we will still lose some big one's, but it seems he's not into turning the clock back socially, and that's good news.

(23,091 posts)They will back drumpf up in anything and everything that has to do with rw political power, watch them protect all his documents even though that is clearly illegal. They will lie to protect and prolong right wing fascism here, watch.

(23,091 posts)We are not fooled, we know this is just a wink and a nod for something that doesn't really impact the party or the rich. When it comes to those, Roberts & Gorsuch will prove themselves to be the fascist Russian Repug (in)justices. Wonder what BS they will invent to enable drumpf to gut the constitution this time?
