Americans need to be educated about the history of racism and the civil war. The confederates betrayed their country to defend slavery and the lie that there was honor in that cannot continue. Cover the full story. The north fought the confederacy, not necessarily to free slaves but to preserve the union.

Racism didn't end with the war nor with the civil rights movement. It continues today. Cover that as well.

This should be required material around the 3rd or 4th grade and again in high school.

Similar material should be cover the treatment of native Americans but not be part of the same time. Separate the two.

My family came to the country around the turn of the last century but that doesn't mean I don't recognize the history of my country. It is proper to feel shame about parts of your country's history even if you or your family took part in particular events.

The right thing to say about confederate ancestors if you have them is they betrayed their country because of their racist beliefs and there is nothing honorable about that.

In effect McConnell is saying he finds treason and racism honorable and so it is fair to call him a traitor and a racist.
