(32,542 posts)My brother does that in every family photo he's ever in.
Do all brothers do this everywhere? It must be so.
Congratulations Malala and good luck in the future!

(575 posts)my most honored heroine. Many,if not most, would have succumbed to the hatred and social pressure represented by the gunshots that racked her young soul.
The fact that she has graduated from her studies and is prepared now to change the lives of millions upon millions of girls and women in her world, is kinda special. Don't you think? Godspeed you Godsend!

(33,455 posts)...of a great rising generation in whom, speaking only for myself, I invest much hope for a better world than that which I will leave soon enough.
I should say that one of my sons gets a little annoyed when I mention her since usually the context is, "Malala won the Nobel Prize, when she was 17. You're late!"
He's 21.
Seriously, this generation may prove to be the greatest yet. They will need to be, given the disastrous world with which we have left them.
Well put, NNadir!

(2,894 posts)She is even wearing her "sub fusc"-- the kind of formal academic dress students wear to the yearly exams, matriculation, graduation, and for some colleges, even formal dining hall. My son has been participating in Trinity term from Modesto, CA--- living with his grandmother (we live in San Francisco)-- and they have delayed the exams he was supposed to sit until the fall. (I think only final year exams were held--albeit remotely, as in Malala's case-- this term.) Not sure exactly what the coming academic year will look like, but he plans to be back in the UK for it.
Congrats, Malala!
Remember, the drinking age is 18, and each college at the university has its own pub(!):

(2,894 posts)most classmates, and he is really hoping to get back to in-person classes. Plus, he wants to play basketball again... and most importantly, to see his girlfriend--who is also basically his fiancee.
It's been interesting getting to know a bit about the Oxford traditions-- like sub fusc and trashing--and to spend more time in a city that is the location for some of my favorite TV shows-- Inspector Morse, Lewis and Endeavor. In 2018, we (my son, husband, daughters, MIL and I) hosted an American Thanksgiving at an Airbnb for my son's friends, basketball teammates, girlfriend and her parents. Shopping for that was an... adventure! I didn't predict very well which things would be available and which wouldn't. Graham crackers--which I had intended to use for a pie crust--were unknown and unavailable, while other things that were available required me to figure out their British names first. It would seem like that would be pretty straightforward, but the British superstore can be much more confusing/overwhelming than our common language would suggest!
