Iowa lawmakers pass secret abortion bill in the dead of night

'They've kept this plan secret for weeks and released it on a Saturday night so they didn't have to hear from Iowans,' House Democratic Whip Jo Oldson said.

Last weekend, Iowa legislators stayed up all night working on the state's budget and key policy priorities as their legislative session came to a close for the year. They also used that time to push through a 24-hour waiting period before a person can obtain an abortion.

Republican GOP Gov. Kim Reynolds, a longtime abortion opponent who once proposed an amendment to the Iowa Constitution that would have banned abortion, has not said outright she will sign the bill on the waiting period, but she has indicated its passage was one of her key legislative priorities.

Both legislative bodies passed the bill within just a few hours, with the House passing it just before midnight on Saturday and the Senate passing it at 5:30 the next morning. It requires that physicians confirm at least 24 hours before performing an abortion that the patient has undergone an ultrasound, received an opportunity to view and hear a description of the ultrasound, and been given information about carrying the pregnancy to term, giving up a child for adoption, and the risks associated with abortion.

Save for the length of the waiting period, the bill is in all respects identical to a 72-hour waiting period bill passed in 2018. That bill was declared unconstitutional by the Iowa Supreme Court, but the composition of the court has changed since then, with Reynolds having appointed four new conservative justices to the seven-member panel.

How quaint, not like the meat packing plants are hot zones for a pandemic that's raging across the state and country, this Gov. Reynolds and her bunch find's time to go after woman, while some of the husbands / wife's may be sick and could possibly die from COVID19, because after all Reynolds doesn't give a shit about workers health and trying to keep people alive in meat packing plants or elsewhere in the state , but by golly she and her clan, have their "right to life" agenda, moving full speed ahead ...................

what is absolutely amazing is that if they were for "life" then she and her crowd of hypocrites would be for protecting people during a pandemic.............and they are not, I bet her and her crowd or just fine and dandy sending people into a conflict and not batting an eye when someone dies from the state, that logic of hypocrisy is just astounding...........and yes they never sleep............there mission statement is to infringe upon people's privacy...............

rights and to women's rights in particular, the better.

And their contemptuous, profoundly insulting attitude toward women, as if those who decide on abortion hadn't been contemplating their realities ever since realizing they might be pregnant.

These people are, of course, coming after the "right to privacy"/"right to be left alone by government" that is the basis for all our legal reproductive rights (and many more, like internet freedoms). In the 1960s, when CT passed a law outlawing birth control (yup!), nothing in the constitution explicitly protected even married couples from that government interference, so liberal justices cobbled up, i.e., "inferred," a basis from various parts. No constitutional amendment needed to get rid of all those legal rights, just a reversal by a conservative-dominated court.

No choice for meat packers but to go to work and die. No choice for a woman to keep government out of their bodies and out of their extremely personal business.
