I know all these changes are good and probably should've occurred years ago, but I have to admit that it'll seem strange living in a world without Aunt Jemima, Uncle Ben, and now, Eskimo Pies. Admittedly, I haven't consumed any of these products for years. However, like many of my generation, these products were part of my childhood and always seemed like they'd be there. That said, I'm not African American or an indigenous Alaskan. As a child I never thought how such marketing negatively stereotyped the groups affected.
In the end, it's all for the best.

(12,410 posts)I wouldnt mind a tasty ice cream treat named after my people. I understand the insinuation of black women being just kitchen helpers and therefore the pancake syrup named Aunt Jemima, but Im not sure that every product out there has a negative connotation.

(11,656 posts)The term "Eskimo" originated with non-native colonists to refer to scores of Arctic tribes most prevalently the Inuit people in Northern Canada. It has a racist history.
Igloo is the name for an ice structure... sure thats a relevant fucking analogy.

(25,586 posts)Eskimo IS considered a pejorative, and as such should not be used for a commercial ice cream product.
