As coronavirus surges across South and West, Texas mayors plead with residents to wear masks

Nine Texas mayors wrote a letter to the states’ residents this week, urging them to wear masks. Coronavirus cases in Texas continue to surge and the number of hospitalizations has been climbing since late May.

“The virus is here,” says the letter, which San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg (I) shared Friday. “Infections are rising. Hospital capacity is filling up. This isn’t meant to scare you, but it is meant to be very honest. The virus doesn’t leave just because our collective urgency has gone away.”

“We’re not playing games or politics,” Nirenberg added.

As cases and hospitalizations rise in states across the South and West, new mask requirements are prompting faceoffs between officials who seek to require face coverings and those, particularly conservatives, who oppose such measures. Several studies this month support wearing masks to curb coronavirus transmission, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend their use as a protective measure.

However, there is this....

New order requires Dallas County businesses to mandate masks on premises

Businesses that don't comply could face up to a $500 fine per violation.

Starting Saturday, businesses must start requiring customers and everyone on the premises to wear a mask to contain the spread of COVID-19 as cases continue climbing. Dallas County commissioners voted 3-2 Friday to pass the mask order — which goes into effect at 11:59 p.m. Friday — after a fiery debate.

The order follows similar rules put in place in other parts of the state earlier this week. Seven of Texas’ 10 most-populous counties have put face mask orders in place on businesses.

Commissioners Elba Garcia and Theresa Daniel voted in favor of the order, along with Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins. Commissioners J.J. Koch and John Wiley Price voted against it because of concerns about enforcement.

Businesses that don’t comply with the order can face a fine of up to $500 per violation, although law enforcement will not be involved. Community outreach workers from Dallas County Health and Human Services will be tasked with making sure businesses are following through, although Jenkins said fines are unlikely.

We shall see how seriously Texans take this order. Here in Kentucky, voluntary ain't getting it done and it's a crap shoot.

KY.............

If Trump thought that everyone wearing masks would get him re-elected, how far do you think this MoFO would go to ENFORCE this rule. Lose your unemployment benefits? Arrests? Send in the military to force compliance? And yet, the people trying to do the right thing have to plead for compliance because Trump undermines them at every turn and encourages defiance. This shit is never going to end.
