Can anyone recommend a site that's keeping track of events over there? Earlier this week it seemed like NK was about to attack the South but I haven't seen anything for the last few days.

(10,053 posts)but there is a DU member named Soryang that writes about Korea (I believe in the Asian Forum) quite often and if you message him, he may be able to point you in the right direction.

The South Korean Military is bad assed. The most modern weapon systems very motivated and big.
They could wreak havoc on Seoul. But it would not be long before their guns were either destroyed or over run.

Of course, all that could go out the window if China decided to support the N. Koreans....again.

(11,949 posts)If they do it out of desperation, I could see the South calling China and asking them you got this? Because China knows the South would crush the North. China and S. Koreas interest are growing more aligned as they do more business.
And I dont think China would be in a hurry to fight South Korea. Even with no American troops it would be a brutal affair. As you stated, the South Korean Military is one of the best in the world.

(11,949 posts)I was in a way making the same point you did. If North Korea attacks the south it will lose decisively. And China knows that.
So at that point the least costly thing for China to do is handle North Korea on their own. Send in their troops and topple the Kims for a more rational government.
That, in my opinion would be preferable to them over a war with South Korea. To the South as well.
