You know your rally is a bust when ...

… the most awe-inspiring part of the evening is being reassured that the “pResident” actually CAN drink a glass of water using just one hand. (Well, sometimes anyway.)

If only they’d installed a ramp onstage, hosed it down, slathered it with Crisco, and had Trump run up and down it a few times, it could have served as a much-needed distraction from his actual sputterings – e.g. slowing down Covid testing because the numbers would make him look bad.

Trump is a self-toppling monument to himself – and now he’s fallen, and he can’t get up.

In the past few months, his numbers have plummeted every time he’s opened his mouth. Tonight’s debacle was just another example thereof – but this time on a much larger scale. The big “campaign comeback tour” kick-off turned out to be attended by a small fraction of the predicted numbers, and supplied a treasure trove of quotes that will no doubt show up in Democratic/Biden ads within hours.

To watch Trump destroyed by anyone would be a joy. Watching him destroy himself – and the GOP with him – is beyond delicious.

How great you can negotiate a ramp and your incredible ability to handle a glass of water.

Remember the early weeks of the administration when he had a few rallies that the media called "campaign style rallies" because it did not compute that he could be running for reelection so shortly after starting? It's like if someone enjoyed the job interview process, got the job but hated it so scheduled more interviews. I don't remember Lincoln having Stephen Douglas brought back for another debate when the war wasn't going well. Except for cutting his own taxes, installing judges and neutering the EPA, all Trump has done is run for a second term. What would be the purpose of the second term?

We all know he is self centered, but it is not as simple as that. We have all had to expand our notion of how self centered a person could be to explain what we are seeing. It's like one person growing to 15 feet tall and redefining how tall a person could get. His ego cannot be understated, he has to be stroked all day everyday, and anyone not stroking him has to be explained away.

So what now? The rallies are about having everyone in the room love him but now there's not enough to fill the room. Expect him to play smaller and smaller rooms until it's just him and the nursing home employee who's just there to change his diaper.
