I thought Republicans were supposed to be the free speech party? When I first got into politics flag burning amendments always failed on free speech grounds.

REASONING (5-4) The majority of the Court, according to Justice William Brennan, agreed with Johnson and held that flag burning constitutes a form of "symbolic speech" that is protected by the First Amendment.
Texas v. Johnson, 491 U.S. 397 (1989), was a decision by the Supreme Court of the United States that invalidated prohibitions on desecrating the American flag, which at the time were enforced in 48 of the 50 states.

(6,547 posts)is the only way to show respect when the flag is being retired from duty. I have taken part in several dozen flag burning ceremonies. What is disrespectful to the flag are the blankets, throws, beach towels, articles of clothing, etc. that show up at tRump's rallies.

(24,259 posts)between having WWII vet dad and Girl Scouts I was taught the 'US Flag Code' as a child as was my husband (only w/Boy Scouts).
I 'personally' don't take issue with certain tasteful uses like flying it upside down to signal distress or on a tshirt but some uses like on a doormat, underwear, swimsuit, handkerchief, bumpersticker, disposable plates, sheets, etc make me shake my head. Why would someone who truly loves this country want to wipe their dirty feet, butts, noses, drag through the dirt/mud or throw in the garbage what 'is' a US Flag? A US flag doesn't have to be fabric or big and fancy to be technically a US flag.

I was usually the only person saying it was a free speech issue but also mocking the other side by claiming it was a distraction from Bush who had nothing to run on so oooh, look out... the skies about to turn black and the sun blotted out from all of the flag burning!

(8,656 posts)Trump Seems to Have Reversed Stance on Flag Burning
By CANDACE SMITH

Donald Trump recently suggested that those who burn the American flag should be jailed or have their citizenship revoked -- but it appears he did not always feel that way.
In an interview done with David Letterman on Jan. 8, 2015, just months before he launched his campaign, Trump agreed with Letterman "100 percent" that flag burning is a form of expression.
As first reported by the Washington Post, the men were discussing the terrorist attack on the French satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo. Trump mentioned that the magazine had a lot of problems, while expressing his shock that such an attack could have happened.
"Here's the example I'm always proud of as an American," Letterman countered. "People, to demonstrate, they think, we're really gonna stick it the United States. 'We're going to set fire to the flag.' "
"Yeah, right," Trump responded.
"And people get - 'Oh my God!' " Letterman said. "Well, no. If that's how you feel, go ahead and burn the flag. Because this country is far greater than that symbol, and that symbol is standing for freedom of expression."
