Masks hinder the expulsion of droplets and, to a lesser extent, aerosolized matter. Both of those can travel farther than six feet, so a mask that stops particles that would otherwise have traveled up to 27 feet is functional far more than 6'

Aerosolized matter can linger for a long period of time, depending on envionment. So the person wearing the mask could be hundreds of feet way before I wander through the aerolosized cloud they left behind.

Six feet is merely the recommended space between people who are going to be in proximity for more than a few seconds. It is not a magic line COVID 19 cannot cross. There are some who are recommending increasing the distance based on how far droplets can travel.

I spoke to a young man in the meat market I frequent, whose mask was below his nose and squarely on his mouth.

I reminded him that the virus can exit from his nose as well as his mouth, and that he needed to pull his mask up over his nose.

He did and then he told me that the mask doesn't fit well, that his chin is too big!

Well.

He needs a bigger, better fitting mask.

and that use ear loops don't stay up because of where ears are placed relevant to the nose.

Shaped masks without nose wires can stay up - unless the ear loops are too tight - which pulls the masks to the "natural" position below the nose .

In a poor fitting mask (or one with out nose wires), straps are better because you can adjust the angle at which they pull. Nose wires should keep masks with loose ear wires in place.

Most masks are not made that way.

... to proclaim that they're following the rules.

Reminds me of child-bullies told not to touch their sibling, so they hover their finger only an inch away from their face while yelling, "I'm NOT touching you!"

Some of them could just be really stupid, I guess, not actually understanding how the masks work.

reminds me of (decades ago) when I was looking for a seat at conference room at work and a guy asked if I would like to sit on his face, I said, why, is your nose longer than your dick?

............ .............

Its' a total wast of a mask to not cover the nose, to wear one with a beard or not adjust the mask properly. I see photos often of people wearing N95s without the metal nose strip bent properly around the nose.

If not worn snug on the face and adjusted correctly, may as well save a mask and donate it to medical personnel.

We should have public service announcements on TV demonstrating proper techniques for wearing, handling and disposal of masks.

I pinch it snug just below my eyeglass line and have bent the rest of the metal so it forms under my eyeglasses. No mask slipping and no glass fogging.

People pull the mask down, rather than take it off, and there you have it....loosey-goosey. Also, in the picture above you can see how the cup-shaped mask fits the face, where the pleated one has no shape to it at all. In order for it to fit taut on the face, it'd probably do a number on the ears.

next I'm going to try a small piece of fabric with buttons on either side, to loop the elastic to, and bypass the ears. It is amazing how much difference there is from one persons face and ears to another

I guess that makes me a fool, a fuckhead, and an idiot, but if I've just been to a store (where I wear it the proper way), and I have a half a mile walk home, I sure like to breathe freely, and so pull it down so I can at least nose-breathe. If it's just one or two people I pass by along the way, and my hands are full with heavy bags of groceries, I just step out to where I'm more than 6 feet and hold my breath as I approach and pass by and about 30 feet past their slip stream.

I'm sure there are people on social media commenting on people like me being total derps, but well, likewise.

Sun Jun 21, 2020, 04:40 PM

You avoided the one you could see - but what about the one who was working there moments before and clocked out (being replaced by a compliant worker)? What about all of the others who aren't paying attention (or just don't care), catch COVID 19, then give it to you, your elderly parents/grandparents, etc.?

No need to get in a confrontation about it - which (at most) would fix the problem as to that one worker on that one occasion. If you let the health department know, they will visit and see if it is a cultural/systemic problem at the store and required the store to address it - making it safer not just for you, on that one occasion, but for anyone who might come into contact with someone infected at that store.
