General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsDr. Harry Edwards just recommended that Colin Kapernick be nominated for a Nobel Prize.
The activist/professor, instrumental in the 1968 Olympic protests and a backer of Muhammed Ali's decision to relinquish his heavyweight crown, appeared on ESPN's "First Take" program.
I can't think of a better candidate for the prize.

(38,958 posts)I sometimes agree but there are people when polled just say stuff to make us look good and will suppress us so we have to be clear that they might be bots making the numbers look good for us.

Edit to add: I would support the prize for Kapernick.

(22,792 posts)Its about sustained and effective activism.
Losing a high paying job in sports does not qualify as suffering.

(7,768 posts)Kapernick is a perfect example of someone who sustained effective activism.
He could have easily backed down at some point and regained his "high paying job".
He chose to stick by beliefs. I don't know if it rises to the threshold of the Noble Prize.
But I would gladly vote to elect him POTUS in 2020 over the idiot in the WH now.
History will treat Kapernick well. The same is not true about the idiot in the WH.
He will be a footnote on the same page as Hitler and other historical evil dictators want to be's.
By the way, I hate professional sports of all kinds. There are not enough Kaepernick's. IMHO
brush
(61,033 posts)his career for an ideal. He was offered a contract but stood by his guns to protest against innocent, unarmed black men and women getting killed by racist police on the streets of America over and over and over. See George Floyd, Rayshard Brooks, Breonna Taylor for the most recent ones out of hundreds over the years.
Are you totally unaware of the protests going on in major cities of the country and the world right now? Kapernick's sacrifice, and he didn't back down, is what built this movement.
Do you get it now?
milestogo
(22,792 posts)Because its not. And you have no idea who you are talking to.

you said Aaron Rodgers. A better quarterback. As if we were discussing who was a better football player.
You totally missed the point and now you're calling me a patronizing jerk. Seriously?

(9,426 posts)Colin sacrificed his career (or many years of it) to make a point. The leaders of the NFL were afraid tRump might send out nasty tweets about them, so they went along with his ideas, against the players. It was a disgrace. YES, bring on the Nobel prize for Colin.

(39,698 posts)You're qualified to nominate him.
University professors, professors emeriti and associate professors of history, social sciences, law, philosophy, theology, and religion; university rectors and university directors (or their equivalents); directors of peace research institutes and foreign policy institutes are all qualified to make nominations.

After reflecting a bit, I'm guessing Dr. Harry Edwards is planning to market the idea to win support before he actually sends the nomination letter, which may prove to be a brilliant plan.
