My boss and I have had lively political discussions for over 10 years. He's a life long conservative and I'm a life long progressive. Our conversations have always been respectful and never rancorous, but certainly challenged the other's positions. He's the kind of person you want to have a political debate with because he makes you think.
I knew he did not like Trump, but he never disclosed for whom he voted in 2016 until just a few moments ago.
When I told him I knew several Republicans who were either going to vote for Biden or refrain from voting altogether, he admitted he voted for Gary Johnson because he could not bring himself to vote for either Trump or Clinton and figured Clinton had it in the bag anyway.
His words, "that probably wasn't the best decision then, but it is absolutely out of the question in 2020. I never thought I'd hear myself say I'd vote for a Democrat, and I have problems with Biden, but he's the only choice. This is not the election to abstain or cast a protest vote."
I'll. Be. Damned.

(8,907 posts)the majority of the current (R)'s compromise only if you give in 100% to their point of view.
That's their current version of compromising.

(8,907 posts)they don't seem to realize that we built the greatest middle-class, the world had
EVER seen from 1933 to 1981, when the (D)'s had the majority in congress every year except
'45-'47 and 53'-'55. That's 44 years out of 48, that the (D)'s controlled BOTH houses of Congress.
What did (D)'s do with all that power?
Again, (D)'s built the greatest middle-class, the world had EVER seen.
In 1981 when RayGun got elected, it has been down hill.
Since 1981, (R)'s have control both houses for 16 years and the (D)'s for 4 years.
The other 20 years were split.

(2,227 posts)I think the question we should worry about is how many who DIDN'T VOTE LAST TIME, will register and vote for him THIS time. He has made it acceptable for people to express the hate that used to be kept in the closet. There are a lot of them.
WE have to harvest from that same group of voters who thought it was useless to vote last time (both siders do it), to register and vote THIS time for Biden, because the very existence of this nation is a stake.
Then we have to make sure they get to the polls.
Then we have to make sure they are ALLOWED to vote.
Then we have to make sure the votes are ACCURATELY counted.
Then we have to make sure his sorry ass is dragged out, preferably in handcuffs, on January 19th.
Piece of cake!!!

(8,787 posts)to realize that Trump was fucking THEM over too........
Give them any other RepubliCON and they will vote for him in a flash.
They still haven't realized it isn't just Trump that's trying to screw them over, it's the entire RepubliCON party.......

(36,413 posts)Real adults are tired of Don the Con's 24x7 whiny me-fest. Never has a president inserted himself into the daily lives of Americans like this one, much less every fucking hour. Real adults are tired of the toddler-in-chief. And by November, red-staters will have lost family and friends to this virus. I don't doubt the GOP is doing everything in their power to steal/swing the election, but they are going to have to work much harder than they did in 2016.

But I have to say I don't trust any CONS! Watch what they do, not what they say!

(24,652 posts)I don't think who Republicans vote for president is going to influence their down ballot choices as much as we'd like to think the Trump effect is poisoning attitudes towards other Republican candidates at the local level. I suspect my Trump humping sheriff will easily win re-election for example.

(275 posts)won't vote for Drumpf, but still voting down ballot for the repukes. the rise of covid-19 cases and early reopening by repukes, may give some pause by Oct/Nov. Coronavirus is here for some time - until a successful vaccine. It will continue to affect lives. Having to change our lives due to it is something people will be thinking about.

(3,055 posts)Secondly, I think your boss is probably more representative of Republicans today than we think. He just had the guts and integrity to come out and admit it. Trump is, and always has been, nothing but a con artist. People can come to grips with the fact they made a mistake. It's tougher to admit you've been conned.
Kudos to your boss, and to you for hanging in there.
