As coronavirus cases surge, California is the latest state to require face masks

There are several reasons why some Americans might refuse to wear a face mask, even in states where it is required. It could be an act of rebellion, which is not an uncommon response in times of heightened uncertainty. It could be related to one’s gender, political affiliation, or because of skepticism about whether wearing masks limits the spread of the coronavirus. For people in that last camp, there’s new evidence to consider.

At least 230,000 cases of coronavirus may have been prevented due to government orders requiring face masks in 15 states and the District of Columbia, according to a new study by two University of Iowa professors, Wei Lyu and George Wehby, published in “Health Affairs,” a peer-reviewed journal. (A second more fully edited version of the study is set to appear in the August issue of Health Affairs.)

On Thursday, California became the latest state requiring masks, issuing a state mandate that most of the state’s nearly 40 million residents wear face masks in public. Previously only essential-business employees had been required to wear them.

States including Arizona, Texas and Florida — where daily cases of coronavirus have recently hit record highs — don’t have state-wide mask mandates. In Arizona and Texas, Republican governors have given mayors the authority to mandate masks in their respective cities, but mayors in Florida have not been given the same authority.

I have no idea why the hell we waited until we got a spike. Newsom should know there are too many fucking idiots here. I live in Nunes district. More stupid than anyone knows what to do with.

And many other LEOs are only going to give lip service to enforcement.

The local public health departments are generally the investigative and enforcement entities for public health orders.

If the police won't enforce individual mask slackers, report the business (a closed space, which is inherently more dangerous) to the public health department. They will investigate and (if necessary) fine businesses that are not in compliance. I'm far less concerned about the lack of mask wearing in open air spaces - and most enclosed spaces fall under health department jurisdicitons.

In my small way, I am refusing to accept deliveries or allow anyone without a mask to profit. I started in Feb. and see no end to the stupidity before we kick the fools out in November.

at a local Super Market Station. Folks, something is about to explode with this Virus. While Fueling,I was the only one of the five or so also fueling, wearing a mask. After pulling my receipt, parked of to the side just to observe the traffic in out of the Grocery(Smiths),maybe one in ten wore masks.

With temps around 100 or so,what the hell can go wrong.

BTW,all those white folks in South Dakota think this is only a African American disease. Heard that one about a hour ago in a phone call from Sodak.

When the virus first hit, there were rampant rumors in the African American communities that it was a white person's disease

Like it's no worse than any other cold or flu season.
Businesses don't make money when they're closed.
The hell with the people.
