You just have to watch it.

(64,995 posts)I saw it on DVR. Wasn't his best, but I thought it was ok.
I share the view, but I'm not going to act on it.
Neither is he.
Above 60, it would be stupid. He said so, himself.

Zoomers are better at bashing millenials, Maher is just pathetic.

(64,995 posts)I'm over 60.
I'm not for being risky.
But, I think it's unrealistic to think it's not going to happen anyway. The aggressive reopenings have created a sense among many, that it's over.
Combine that with the stir crazy aspect, and the activities resuming was inevitable.
He's not saying anything that wasn't going to happen anyway.
That's why I think the bit was ok.

(64,995 posts)However, I think you're outnumbered.
Here in NE Illinois, in <3 weeks, I've seen mask compliance go from more than 95% to less than 2 in 3.
The most likely resistors were under 40, easily. Most of them appear to be under 30.
People not so far personally affected are already in the "time to move on" mode.

(29,322 posts)Every time I went out which was rarely I always saw cars on the road we were never a ghost town during this thing that is probably why I'm more upset than I would be.
This virus is very stressful and Trump hasn't helped out at all.

(64,995 posts)...we're well down the slope from the peak and the governor is holding the line on phase triggers.
And I'm seeing the laxity here. We were losing over a hundred people a day for 4 weeks, but people relaxed pretty darned fast.

(58,785 posts)Why so badly underestimate the ability of people be careful when they believe the lives of those they care about could depend on it? When they already demonstrated their capability? When genuine concern is measured by polls taken of people not out in the pix the media lead their bleed with?
In any case, we'll see. Inevitably, in fact. After all, epidemiologists say this has become the huge disaster they feared.

Some VERY sick
So they may not die in the same numbers as older people but a lot of the under 30 crowd still needs medical care. They should be denied care if they are so cavalier about the virus. They have no right to ignore all safety concerns then place health care workers at risk to heal them from their stupidity.
600 health care workers have died already. So if these young invincibles act irresponsibly then they dont get to place health care workers at risk.
Maher is wrong on this. Dead wrong.

I could never understand the love for him here. Yes he does have some good ideas and attacks idiots. But he is a libertarian, not a Democrat. And not believing in germ theory makes him an moron.

(63,221 posts)I don't have an issue with people who smoke pot. I never really liked it. It just never really agreed with me.
What does bother me is when people who get high constantly get all self-righteous about how "healthy" they are because of the way they eat and tell you pot is fine because it's "natural". Pot smokers tend to have more frequent lung illnesses and a higher risk of lung infection such as bronchitis, etc. Even though pot is not as carcinogenic as most brands of cigarettes, it is not with out its negative effects on the body.
It has also been found to have long term effects on cognitive functioning, especially if you start at an early age. There are other damaging effects of regular marijuana use, but I won't go into it, and I don't really care. It's not the worst drug out there. I just can't stand it when people who are daily tokers present themselves as the paragons of health and wellness.
JonLP24
(29,322 posts)We are certainly not a monolith. My issue is how it became illegal in the first place. During the same era we legalized alcohol FDR had a very racist drug czar. Racism is part of what led these drugs to be illegal in the first place.
Also the US has the highest incarceration rate in the world and these drug wars have gotten out of control since Nixon. It is also a Schedule I drug.
Personally I don't like alcohol and it is far more addictive with worse side effects while cannabis is very benign.
smirkymonkey
(63,221 posts)And I agree that alcohol can be much worse for you than pot. I don't have an issue w/ most pot smokers.
It's just that there is a certain "type" of pothead, not all of them, who is super self-righteous about everything, including how healthy they are - everything is "natural", organic, vegan, etc..., however they are still can't go more than a few hours w/out getting high. It just seems kind of ironic to me, and it is definitely annoying.

Plant-based diet can fight climate change - UN
A major report on land use and climate change says the West's high consumption of meat and dairy produce is fuelling global warming.
But scientists and officials stopped short of explicitly calling on everyone to become vegan or vegetarian.
They said that more people could be fed using less land if individuals cut down on eating meat.
(Snip)
"We're not telling people to stop eating meat. In some places people have no other choice. But it's obvious that in the West we're eating far too much," said Prof Pete Smith, an environmental scientist from Aberdeen University, UK.

This is more of a problem in the UK & US with factory farming. I'm not self righteous about it or preach just trying to do what I can for the environment & explaining why I stopped eating meat.

(8,697 posts)Last Fri, he was upset about the unemployed getting their weekly $600, thinks if everyone eats well - they wont get Covid, people need to get back to work (while he is isolating)... All of this coming from a person who has lots of money. My grandson is getting the extra $600 and its enabled him to fix his car. He doesnt realize what a big help that is to the average worker. Many do not have jobs to go back to.

(25,531 posts)This asshole standing in his garden protected by fencing and delivery men and a whole host of things which the rich can afford. And hes telling young people to go out and party with a few caveats. This is beyond absurd and who doesnt come in to contact with older or susceptible people?
I think thats correct that hes tired of not making as much money and figures its his turn to get back in the swing of things. So for him I say in my best Maher tone: fuck you Bill.

(58,785 posts)to the principles of enlightened individualism over the statism we should have left behind centuries ago, for the right of the individual to exist? For commitment to equality and to the rights to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness, among others?
To suggest young people have a duty to put themselves at risk instead of following the earnest pleadings of epidemiologists, knowing that lives would be sacrificed that don't have to be?
By denying the right of individuals to the equal protection of and membership in society, he's already hinting at the same-old evil duty to die, for young warriors for the economy who can produce and for people who're no longer producing economically. Or were never able. If fascism did take over, he'd already be within the last few hops to safe membership in the ruling cabal.
Whatta creep.
