LA congresswoman Bass being vetted for VP

Intereting!

Joe Biden’s campaign is vetting congresswoman Karen Bass, the chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, as a candidate to be his running mate, according to a new report from CBS.

Bass, a five-term congresswoman who represents Los Angeles, endorsed Biden back in March.

“Karen Bass would be a big plus…she is a great person in my mind, I work with her every day,” House Majority Whip James Clyburn told CNN in June when asked about Biden’s vetting process.

If Joe is selecting her to be vetted I’m sure she’s a great person like all the rest of the ones we’re familiar with.

Her position on criminal justice, particularly where women are concerned, is def worth paying attention to.

Bass believes that the criminal justice system is broken in part due to the disproportionate incarceration rates of poor people of color. Bass currently serves as Chair of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, Homeland Security. She has long called for criminal justice reform and to pay special attention to the way women are treated by the criminal justice system – from how they originally entered the criminal justice system, how they are treated when in prison, and what happens to them after they return to their communities.

In 2018, she voted in favor of the First Step Act, which divided Democrats and focused on rehabilitating people in prison by incentivizing them with the possibility of earlier release. Her contribution to the bill was a section addressing the inhumane practice of shackling women during pregnancy, labor and delivery.

She was Speaker of the California Assembly (i.e., Speaker of the House of one of the largest governmental bodies in the US), chair of the CBC, and serves on the Foreign Affairs Committee, one of Biden’s strong interests.

I’ve heard her speak on TV, and she has excellent presence.

Experience with consideration of the protests and so on. Bass is a good alternative to them, and also has some solid experience.
