(4,043 posts)For most google searches, the location towards the top of the list is sold out to the highest bidder, plus there is a per click that the website owner must pay to google, even if you do not buy anything. Usually, it's something small like 1 to 10 cents. But that can really add up if say everyone on DU were to click through to a campaign and then not donate and not buy stuff.
You can cause the change to happen over and over again if you click through the google seach and click on the one's that say 'ad' next to them. If you really hate someone's site, you can troll them for a lot of money by just clicking through.
On the flip side, many sites get a per slide click through 'ad bonus' when you click on one of those '40 celebrities who let themselves go' type click bait for each slide that you progress through.
Google now makes money from selling your info. They first became profitable by selling the top search spots and charging click through fees.

(2,929 posts)Google sells access to a target audience through the data it has about you, but they do not release any of their collected data to outside parties. They actually guard against that fiercely, that's their bread and butter. Yes, there are problems with Google's data collection, but selling your info isn't their big issue.

(3,436 posts)And the knowledge they certainly will, wouldn't it be nice if the campaigns had to shut down their sites, and have the candidate actually get out there and talk to people? I'm thinking of Truman and his whistle stop campaign. Think about it. Trump continues to build walls between himself and the public, both physically and metaphorically. Joe has the human touch...he needs to make that a big part of his campaign.
