Red-State votes and enough votes in places like MI, WI, and PA by successfully appealing to the dark parts of the national psyche. Thanks to the decline in manufacturing and the decline in the labor movement (and not to mention the massive swells of dark money), there weren’t enough good guys to oppose him.

For the last 15 years I’ve become convinced that the right-wing mindset is so strongly fixed in some people’s brains that the only way they’ll wise up is through massive, prolonged pain (Not all of them will do so). Some of these folks are getting their lesson in ways that appeals to decency, goodwill, reason, and their own self-interest were unable to impress.
