REI joins growing list of companies boycotting Facebook over hate speech, misinformation

Popular outdoor retailer REI has joined companies such as The North Face, Upwork and Patagonia in boycotting Facebook and pulling ads from their site.

The Kent-based company joined the #StopHateforProfit campaign started by the Anti-Defamation League, NAACP and other advocacy groups last Wednesday to protest the platform's lack of regulation and enforcement of racist, violent and misleading content on its site.

"It is clear that Facebook and its CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, are no longer simply negligent, but in fact, complacent in the spread of misinformation, despite the irreversible damage to our democracy. Such actions will upend the integrity of our elections as we head into 2020," said NAACP CEO Derrick Johnson in a statement.

REI stated that it will pull ads on the social media platform, which includes Instagram, until July. Patagonia also pledged to pull ads from the site and its subsidiaries "pending meaningful action from the social media giant."

Why aren't they pulling their ads permanently?

I've been a member since 1973, and I've watched what once was a wonderful coop become pretty much just another corporate entity (even if they aren't legally a corporation).

This is actually more insulting than if they didn't do anything at all.
