It's a story I just learned about last week and it's finally getting wider attention (twitter etc.) and it's something people need to hear about.
Elijah was a 23 year old African American man who lived in Aurora, CO. In his spare time, he played the violin for kittens in a shelter, so you can understand what a threat to public safety he was. 10 months ago, he went to the store to buy an iced tea for his brother. On the way home, someone called 911 to report a guy who looked "sketchy" because he was waving his arms and was wearing a mask to cover his face (he suffered from anemia and got cold a lot).
And here come the police. They stopped him and wanted to cuff him. So they tackled him. You can watch the video of his murder--you may not want to because I still cry when i think about it--and hear his last words: "I'm just different." "I'm an introvert." "I don't even kill flies." "All I was trying to do was become better."
Those words stab me as I type them.
The cops applied a carotid hold on him. Then EMTs came and injected 500 MG of ketamine into his neck. He went into cardiac arrest, was declared brain dead, and his parent opted not to continue life support. The autopsy said his cause of death was "undetermined" and the cops who murdered him were cleared of wrongdoing.
