(14,853 posts)I prefer to live "in a bubble" too, called science and truth, so I'm thinking some of these people are getting horrible information beyond even Fox News.

(12,372 posts)Ya see, if they's s'posed ta stay home, they can't go to church. And if they can't go to church = no $ in the church till.
So it makes sense. Orders to stay home and wear masks when you are out must be the Debil's work.

Jesus does not make people sick. Also, you are not a Christian if you dont love your neighbor as your self. You cant kill or make your neighbor sick.

(11,730 posts)On the one hand, the internet has opened access to a lot of new information and perspectives. The world's knowledge is at our fingertips.
On the other hand, without critical thinking skills, a knowledge of the scientific method, and research skills, people are highly susceptible to misinformation and falling into echo chambers that feed their fears, paranoia, etc...
No doubt many of those who were speaking at the BOS meeting are regular viewers of either right wing or left wing woo and conspiracy media. They sound like they are unstable in their grasp of reality.
There are pockets (that are unfortunately, very easy to find and fall into) on the internet, that start off "just asking questions", known colloquially as "jaqing off" and feeding "information" that is anti- establishment and just plain wrong and crazy. Like Flat Earthers, Moon Conspiracy people, 911 inside jobbers, and other groups, these people likely fell into a group that thinks that these health professionals and government are engaged in a conspiracy to "control us all".
Part of it is because government and experts have often failed us by not being transparent and by allowing themselves to be influenced by money (think back to the 50's and 60's where Tobacco lobbies paid not only doctors, but politicians and universities to promote smoking despite early knowledge of the effects of tobacco.) We have government allowing asbestos and lead paint for years, knowing about the health hazards (and Trump trying to relax the prohibition on asbestos even today.) We have Flint, where the government allowed contaminated pipes to continue to be used to save money.
Science is a process, not an end state. Because it is conducted by people, it is imperfect and subject to distortion (think the Autism-Vaccine study done by Wakefield and colleagues). We need to do better about talking and teaching about how knowledge is acquired. We have to challenge the assumption that is growing, that "my opinion is as valid as your knowledge". I think that evidence, logic, and critical thinking needs to be taught (if possible) starting in elementary school.
