Especially when they try to use their privilege as a weapon.

(22,336 posts)Women who are assertive are called bitches, which is misogynistic for sure.
Women who use systemic racism to go after Black people, such as the woman in Central Park who tried to get police to go after a Black bird watcher, get called a Karen. It's for using whiteness as a weapon, and not all white women do that.

(29,322 posts)Than the behavior described. There is also Chad for males who act in similar ways. Maybe we should go back to BBQ Becky. Seemed to cause a lot less controversy.

(22,336 posts)I don't know what other women would use whiteness as a weapon. I'm trying to wrap my head around how that would work. I guess it might be theoretically possible for someone who isn't white? I'm not sure.

My crazy sister has pleasantly surprised me with her attention to the pandemic and the following of safety measures, though. So there's a bottom to her extremism, thankfully.

(2,406 posts)I find this trend of calling every white woman you don't like a "Karen" to be disturbing.
It's misogynist and it's stupid. And let me be blunt: it's downright hateful.
Call out objectionable behavior -- and explain precisely why it's objectionable -- but don't rely on stupid, misogynist stereotypes.
Yesterday, we had a couple of posts about a man who, after a road rage incident, following a woman back to her home (OMG!) to berate her and repeatedly call her a "Karen" on video. Apparently, he did this for TikTok points or whatever the viral currency is nowadays and to promote T-shirt sales (immediately after posting the video, the guy, a professional comedian, tried to sell T-shirts based on this incident.). This guy was also, according to one source, a black Trump supporter, who had a restraining order against him by one woman, and who had previously accused other women of calling him a racial slur. (Curious how women always seemed to be his opponents. Wonder why that was?) And yet we had DUers siding with him and against her. We had DUers calling her hysterical and crazy for being freaked about by a strange male following her home (again, OMG!).
Enough already. Using the word "Karen" does not make you edgy. It makes you look stupid (at best).

(29,034 posts)I'm a white woman who's also noticed this trend and found it disturbing...I know I'm not alone in appreciatiing your support.
"Call out objectionable behavior -- and explain precisely why it's objectionable -- but don't rely on stupid, misogynist stereotypes."
You've summed it up perfectly -- Thanks again, friend.

(29,034 posts)with the "karen" meme and more.
PTWB
(4,131 posts)As long as it is not used in a misogynistic way. I dont mind labeling a man who is behaving badly a Dick, and I dont mind labeling a woman behaving badly as a Karen. It is a term that allows us to pinpoint and label bad behavior. In this day and age of tweets and hashtags, #Karen is a powerful tool to quickly call out someone who is exploiting their privilege, often in a racist way.
The problem for me comes when people start using that term to describe women in much more generic scenarios. THAT is not okay.
whathehell
(29,034 posts)to do it, as it consists of singling out a particular gender and race for a disrespectful nickname, i.e. white women, and, no, "dicks" is not comparable, because, for one thing, it's race neutral.
It's racist and sexist, period. Any in doubt should ask themselves if badly behaved black men should be referred to as "Jamals", or badly behaved black women "Lakeishas".
An honest response to that question should provide some insight.
PTWB
(4,131 posts)We can disagree about Karen - when used properly it is calling out someone exploiting their privilege often in a racist way.
We ought to be careful with such terms so that they do not become misogynistic slurs. If that happens they should be banned, of course.
If you feel that the term Karen is being used inappropriately and in a way that violates the rules I suggest you report those posts. I know I report misogynistic content occasionally. I saw someone post a meme last week with the b-word in it and there were many posters who cheered it on.

(27,553 posts)Calling out mainly white women playing the race card...
Agitprop is usually not nice... It is designed as a means of resistance.
If you are using it as a means of resistance against a racist majority, I have 0 issues with it.
Doesn't mean I would use it, but in context feel free.
It's actually rather benign relative what some of these people could and should be called.

because there are too many really dumb Trump racists. I like giving them a name. So ......... we should not stereotype really angry mean white women who are racists????

(22,336 posts)A lot of them seem to be but I remember at least a couple being Democrats. We all have work to do as far as racism goes.
gollygee
(22,336 posts)but yeah the Karen thing might be misplaced here. It's about white women using their position in our society to gain favor or win in confrontations with Black people or other POC. It isn't for every time a white woman is upset about anything. Sometimes people get upset about stuff.
