Disney faces pushback on Walt Disney World reopening

(Reuters) - Petitioners are pressing Disney to delay the July 11 reopening of its Orlando, Florida-based Walt Disney World, citing recent spikes in COVID-19 cases in the state.

By Wednesday, more than 7,000 people had signed the petition, which was created by Katie Belisle, a Disney World Attractions hostess, and addressed to Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer and Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings.

“This virus is not gone, unfortunately it’s only become worse in this state,” the petition says. “Having our theme parks remain closed until cases are steadily decreasing would keep our guests, our employees and their families safe.”

Belisle could not immediately be reached for comment.

Universal and SeaWorld have been open for about 3 weeks now. Is it possible some of this is from that? Maybe. But not likely.

Most of the cases are coming from south Florida. And indoor locations are much more likely to be sources of spread due to being indoors, closer together, and likely without masks

Most of the nation had massive protests for days and days but the spikes are focused on southern states where things have “reopened”

That said, I have to say I’m in favor but need to keep attendance restricted for quite a while. Don’t even think Shanghai is over 40% yet

Shows, parades, fireworks have all been canceled to prevent mass gathering of crowds

They just need to enforce mask wearing, esp indoors

I’ve just started looking into regression charting to compare rise of hospitalizations and deaths lagging new cases

I brute forced an overlay of charts to see if it was even worthwhile and I will be working on it tomorrow

There definitely seems to be that lagging correlation. The only saving grace for us will be it’s mostly younger age groups and they don’t require hospitalization as much as older age groups.

Just depends on how this spreads back to those older groups

Next 2-3 weeks will be quite telling
