Especially since the conventions are really just commercials these days anyway, it's almost a perfect opportunity to use the medium to our benefit. With a combination of live and pre-recorded material, this can be an exciting way to liven up the convention experience for television, taking what would otherwise be a frustrating impediment and using it as an advantage.
I think of how lots of people were worried about what the virtual NFL draft would look like. Turns out that it was a fun experience, and commentators raved about what a nice change of pace it was.
Here's hoping the Democratic Party gets the best show business and tech people on this and absolutely nails it.

If done well, a virtual convention will be a breakthrough, giving each Democrat, indeed each American, a ticket to the convention, and a feeling of belonging and ownership in the process.

(1,184 posts)Went off without a hitch, and a lot of folks had the frame of mind that it's hard to imagine a draft that wasn't like that one.
Funny how matters of necessity lead to things that wind up becoming precedent.

I'd bet anything our planners were watching to see how it came off. Biden will be in Milwaukee, but the delegations will, I guess of course, be in their home states. Epidemiologists consulted on all, no one dying "for" the party.
Speaking of lemons and lemonade, at least our original plan to develop a new model of sustainability for this and future conventions should be fairly easy to carry off without tens of thousands of people pouring into Milwaukee for the big national party.

The best part: being able to have VPBiden, Speaker Pelosi, Senators Harris, Warren, and other party dignitaries all speak at the general sessions. I missed the lively atmosphere of being in the hall with 10000 Democrats, but it still worked.
We were also able to attend caucuses, and a really neat event called the "Women's Room" whichfeatured women from across the state, just dropping in for a visit There were scheduled speakers who led various discussions, we all introduced ourselves to each other. Normally this is a room or area set aside for women to drop in and hear speakers, take a load off, visit, have light refreshments. The virtual version was more condensed timewise but we were able to interface with more people at one time.
I believe the DNC can pull off a great convention, especially since they have had more lead time than we did.

(1,535 posts)....creative and talented types working for us and the convention will be a great show that more people will watch than usual. The republicans can't match that for no other reason than they lack happiness. Think about Trent Lott and "The Singing Senators", a truly bad barbershop quartet that performed at a convention a few years back. Painful to watch.
