Far-UVC Light Safely Kills Airborne Coronaviruses

More than 99.9% of seasonal coronaviruses present in airborne droplets were killed when exposed to a particular wavelength of ultraviolet light that is safe to use around humans, a new study at Columbia University Irving Medical Center has found.

“Based on our results, continuous airborne disinfection with far-UVC light at the current regulatory limit could greatly reduce the level of airborne virus in indoor environments occupied by people,” says the study’s lead author David Brenner, PhD, Higgins Professor of Radiation Biophysics at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons and director of the Center for Radiological Research at Columbia University Irving Medical Center.

2. That's still within the range of UV light that produces ozone.

Ozone is a disinfectant as well, but it's not something you want to breathe.

penetrate the skin.

However there has been a breakthrough, its been proven that far-UVC light (207-222 nm) efficiently inactivates bacteria without harm to exposed mammalian skin.

I have seen ads for devices that a person wears that emits ozone, to fight the virus. One product has the device on the face mask.

In the short term I can see a lot of businesses installing these. Long term I think commercial buildings may have this wavelength incorporated into their lighting plus a variety of UV and other sorts of virus-killing filters installed in their HVAC systems.

retrofits. Colds and flu will find itself hard to spread there.
