"I don't represent hate", Branson woman apologizes after viral video (she has been fired)

Asha Rangappa @AshaRangappa_

Wow. KKKaren — the woman who was screaming that she was going teach her children to hate black people — now claims she was really chanting Black Lives Matter and that someone handed her a Confederate flag and she took it bc she didn’t know what it was.

“I don’t represent hate”, Branson woman apologizes after viral video

SPRINGFIELD, Mo.– From an undisclosed location, Kathy Jenkins called the KOLR10 newsroom. Her mission: To make a public apology for the “ugly” things she said in a now-viral video.

The video, which surfaced on Monday, isn’t long. It only runs about 35 seconds. In it, Jenkins sits and later stands on the bed of a pickup truck while holding and dancing with a Confederate flag.

"I will teach my grandkids to hate you all,” she says to someone off camera. She later raises her fist and declares “KKK belief.”

Since the video surfaced, Kathy says she’s been locked out of Facebook and fired from her job (a punishment she says she deserved). She says she’s been the target of a few threats and she says even her friends are being threatened.

When she called KOLR10 and Ozarks First, she wouldn’t even say where she was calling from; only specifying that she has left Branson, her home of six years.

All of this, a response to what she describes as a misunderstood portion of her day caught on video.

But then again, if you're a racist, you're not too smart in the first place and you end up making hard to believe apologies and offering nonsensical reasons for your actions.

I am reminded of a time when my nephew, who was 11 at the time, said, "I'm not racist, but..." My sister (his mom) said, "THEN STOP RIGHT NOW....because the next thing that comes out of your mouth will undoubtedly be racist".

We had a discussion about, "I'm not..., but" statements and race.

The thing is that we are ALL, every single one of us, exposed to racism, bigotry, and hate through explicit or subtle messages in media and culture. We all carry around stereotypes. They help us to simplify the world, but can be toxic. It isn't whether we carry the ideas in our head, because I think that we all do. It is whether we accept the ideas as "true" or "valid" AND especially, if we ACT on them and discriminate and try to hold people down based on those ideas.

This woman clearly knows the language of racism, and she felt comfortable enough to express it knowing that she was being captured on video.

She may feel shame, but I think it it more the shame of being caught than the shame for acting on her internal process. I do hope that this situation will have a lasting effect on her thinking and she learns that allowing racist ideas to influence your thoughts and actions has consequences on everyone.

Rando shaming is more about making the shamers feel good about themselves than it is about educating the shame.

For the person who took the video, who was being harassed and verbally assaulted, it is a record. Proof of the attitudes and behaviors. Before the proliferation of video cameras on phones, these regular occurrences could be denied and Black people were told that they were exaggerating or lying.

I agree that for some, the act of shaming brings a pleasure, and that is as far as they take things. For others, it is about confronting the subtle and the naked racism that continues to hurt people.

might be psychotic but she appeared to know what she was doing at the time-I watched the video. Then there's this obviously "biased" observation:

"One of the organizers of Branson’s Black Lives Matter protest responded to Kathy’s claims and apology:

“She knew exactly what she was doing. She was there from the start on the counter-protesters’ side shouting obscenities and hateful words at our protesters. I think her claims to not know what the confederate flag is and what it represents are absurd and lies. She proudly shouted “KKK belief” in front of all of us. Her apology does not make sense as she’s trying to state she didn’t realize she was on the opposing side. How do you not realize that if you’re on Dixie Outfitter’s property holding a confederate flag along with the other counter-protesters that are facing us? She never once shouted ‘black lives matter’ along with us. This woman is lying and apologizing because she’s sorry she got caught in her acts of racism.”

Racism isn't an on/off switch, lady. You can't just flick it to "off" and think you're done with it.

The state of MO has many many good decent, kind, and warm hearted people, not anything like this POS. She makes me want to puke (by the way, I've lived all over the state, family all over the state, and I've yet to find anything remotely like this POS, thank god).

Figures kind of that she's in Branson, a tourist spot that attracts job seekers from all over. Mo is full of tourist traps (Lake of the Ozarks, Branson, etc., all needing thousands of min. wage workers to run fast food restaurants, shops, etc.).

Another case of a severe lack of exposure to diversity and undereducation.
