The GOP attorneys general want lawmakers' 'assistance in tempering the anti-police rhetoric that is jeopardizing the safety of our officers.'
Eleven Republican state attorneys general signed on to a letter to Congress this week to complain that people are saying critical things about law enforcement and to demand that Congress take some kind of action to stop it.
The letter, spearheaded by Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall and Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry, praises law enforcement and asks House and Senate leadership to assist in quelling anti-police sentiments: "We especially rely on you, as the leaders of the most important legislative body in the world, to discourage dangerous disinformation and to help us restore the countrys faith in the overwhelming majority of law-enforcement officers who perform their jobs honorably and bring stability to our cities and states."
The other attorneys general who signed on to the letter were Leslie Rutledge of Arkansas, Curtis Hill of Indiana, Lynn Fitch of Mississippi, Doug Peterson of Nebraska, Wayne Stenehjem of North Dakota, Dave Yost of Ohio, Mike Hunter of Oklahoma, Alan Wilson of South Carolina, and Ken Paxton of Texas. The Western States Sheriffs Association and Southwestern Border Sheriffs Association also signed on to the letter.
After a lengthy defense of the role and work of police in America, the attorneys general complained, "Individuals, including members of Congress, are dangerously fanning the flames of emotion by tacitly or explicitly supporting the 'Defund the Police' (or worse) movement," which, they say, is "inciting chaos."

(9,895 posts)How about we try something different this time? Huh?
We ALWAYS circle back to how fucking hard the job is, how much stress the officers face, how difficult it is to react properly in a tense stand-off....blah fucking blah...
The police are under fire (rightly so) because their first, second and third response in an interaction with minorities is to 1) YELL and INTIMIDATE, 2) PANIC and POINT WEAPONS, 3) ESCALATE AND FIRE.
Or, in cases where an actual weapon is not used, physical force, choke holds and dangerous encounters that escalate instead of contain situations are the norm, not the exception...and if that is WRONG, show the stats, interview the people who agree with the way the police interacted with them...make THAT case, but spare me the same old same ol defense...
THAT is one of the major reasons that the police are taking heat, the other reason? The hypocrisy of the "thin blue line" mentality. This ingrained idea that good cops can never "rat out" bad cops or even hold them to account publicly for fear of on the job reprisals or worse from these same "bad officers".
If the police want my respect back, here are some BARE FUCKING MINIMUMS to achieve:
1) De-escalation training for ALL officers in ALL interactions with citizens...a black man pulled over on a traffic stop has to be able to feel only the same annoyance that I feel as a white man, period. Until the black man pulled over does not have a legitimate fear for his life throughout that interaction, then fuck you Mr. Officer, you are STILL doing it wrong...
2) Citizen review boards must be mandatory for EVERY time an officer draws their weapon and mandatory investigations and reassignment off the streets must apply for EVERY weapon discharge, period. Their goddamn job is to "PROTECT and SERVE" not "JUDGE AND EXECUTE", period.
3) I want to see massive protests of misbehavior and internal affairs investigations of these so called "bad apples" with FULL UNION SUPPORT...the unions and officers should WANT the inappropriate cops exposed and run off the force, period.
There is so very much more that must be done, but those things are immediate and the GOP AGs can suck their respect out of my member if they refuse to require them from the men in blue...
