Republicans say President Trump should make a course correction and shift his strategy after a series of dismal polls showed him badly trailing presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden.
Republican senators thought Trump was cruising to reelection only a few months ago but they now worry his relentless focus on revving up his partys base is hurting his chances, as well as their own of staying in control of the upper chamber.
I think right now obviously Trump has a problem with the middle of the electorate, with independents, and theyre the people who are going to decide a national election, Senate Majority Whip John Thune (R-S.D.) said Wednesday.
I think he can win those back, but it will probably require not only a message that deals with substance and policy, but I think a message that conveys a perhaps different tone, he added.

(58,785 posts)Trump would just have to GOTV in November, and they're always quivering eagerly for red meat tossed to them by their leader. He's also been reading teleprompter script they know is completely insincere ("They made me say this." all along.

(58,785 posts)Those have a way of immediately causing whole populations to temporarily become more conservative and rally around their leader. Of course, this leader is increasingly appearing even to the right as an irrational bumble-blob instead of the strongman they thought they elected. Considering his ongoing summer meltdown, an autumn attack might only assist Russia by creating the chaos they intend anyway.
Btw, Trump's been hinting that some things that will be coming out, strongly reminiscent of their Russian-aided attacks on Hillary. Just before our convention would continue their new tradition, but that doesn't begin until August 17.
And their attempts to convince people Covid will be over by Easter, then by Memorial Day, and now it's about to disappear are...losing credibility. They need something sooner.

(2,336 posts)He is not strategic. He does not plan or think things through. He's lizard-like in his myopic thinking. Only one thing is in his view and that is himself. He's simply too stupid to realize he's never going to have a second term due to his own actions.
