Lauremce Tribe was commenting on yesterday's column by Eugene Robinson (link and excerpt from that below), in which Robinson said it's as if Trump is out to destroy the GOP.
Tribe says it's worse than that:

Im talking to you, Sen. Susan Collins of Maine. And you, Sen. Cory Gardner of Colorado. And you, Sens. Thom Tillis of North Carolina, Martha McSally of Arizona, Joni Ernst of Iowa, Steve Daines of Montana, Kelly Loeffler of Georgia and John Cornyn of Texas. And while those of you in deep-red states whose reelection ordinarily would be seen as a mere formality may not see the giant millstones youve hung around your necks as a real risk, think again. Sen. Lindsey O. Graham of South Carolina and even Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, you should look at the numbers and realize you are putting your Senate seats and the slim GOP majority in dire jeopardy.
You can run and hide from reporters asking you about Trumps latest statements or tweets. You can pretend not to hear shouted questions as you hurry down Capitol hallways. You can take out your cellphones and feign being engrossed in a terribly important call. Ultimately, youre going to have to answer to voters and in the meantime you have decided to let Trump speak for you. Best of luck with that.
It is not really surprising that Trump, with his poll numbers falling and his reelection in serious jeopardy, would decide to use race and public health as wedge issues to inflame his loyal base. Thats all he knows how to do.
-snip-
All the other Republicans who fail to speak up while Trump runs the most nakedly racist presidential campaign since George Wallace in 1968 shouldnt kid themselves. Their silence amounts to agreement. Perhaps theres enough white bitterness out there to carry the Republican Party to another narrow win. But thats not what the polls say.
Trumps antics are self-defeating. Hell put on a racist show for a shrinking audience, but he wont wear the masks that could allow the economic reopening he desperately wants. He may be able to avoid reality, but the Republican governors including Greg Abbott of Texas and Ron DeSantis of Florida scrambling desperately to contain new outbreaks cannot.
-snip-
Of course Trump never cared about the Republican Party, or any other party. He just views political parties, like individuals and situations, in terms of how much he can exploit them. And he knew he could exploit the Republicans, easily, after they fell for his birther idiocy.

(16,616 posts)It's also how he's rationalized allowing the pandemic to run amok. In his mind, we all deserve to be punished for not appreciating that he is a "great president, as great as or greater than Lincoln." It's part of a pattern of vengeance that is a core characteristic of his very being.
It's also an extension of his promised revenge against Impeachment.
He fails, and then he justifies his failures retroactively as "successes."
I hope he gets it. I wouldn't want to wish it on anyone but those who responsible for letting it spread should be subjected to it too.

(38,187 posts)I don't think he is doing it now only. I think he went in determined to do it. Everything he has done has worked to destroy the country. It is probably why he sees himself as successful. His goal was that in the first place, imo.

(1,789 posts)The only thoughts in his head are "I'm great" and "How do I attack or wish away anyone who thinks I'm not". He does not have the capacity to plan destruction. The "as if" part of this is key.

(11,885 posts)And I expect he'll use anyway he can to do just that when he's rejected with a embarrassing loss, and his revenge could be to do things to tank the markets, and things to hurt people with abuse of his powers. He will also blame the Republicans , which he really isn't a conservative republican, he a racist fascist, so he then will do things to hurt them with too. Republicans are close to turning on him too after his damming tweets and statements are dragging them down now also. The virus is kicking his ass now, and he can't normalize all the deaths he's help cause, and is continuing to cause. trump is having trouble lying his way out of it all now, and its catching up to him.

(1,615 posts)get re-elected. That's the only way his legacy could come close to Obama. The problem is he focused so hard on that goal he could not govern because everything was about him. Now he does not care.

(7,627 posts)We all saw his face election night and it reeked of fear.
He's doing his best to just make tons of money on this gig but if he loses, the GOP, who usually look out for their own, won't help him afterward like they usually would I don't imagine. He's insulted and pissed off so many, especially those who were once in his administration, they'd probably love to see him jailed.
If there's any justice he will be.

(43,137 posts)Fascist Nazi grab of power and privilege for elites who hate taxes to provide government. He's torn the New Deal to shreds, everything Obama. It's snide birtherism morphed into deconstruction. Yeah maybe that's more truth than it appears. After the Civil War we had Reconstruction. This is Deconstruction.
