(15,100 posts)And we get our results out pretty quickly, but we've been doing it for 20 years and have figured it out.
The states that are new to this kind of mail-in volume may struggle.

The states that rely mostly on in-person voting should have been in contact to prepare and upgrade their systems. But for many Republican run states, they don't WANT it to be easy to vote.

(11,738 posts)I do understand that Conservatives in general, understand that their policies serve only the wealthy and thus would not be as popular. They know it and so they think the fewer people who vote, the better for them to maintain power.
Thing is that once again, data shows that more voting does not necessarily mean less Republican wins.
What vote by mail does however, is make it more difficult to disenfranchise Democratic Voters. If you get a ballot sent to you weeks in advance, you can vote at your leisure and send it in knowing that it will likely be collected. You can't win by closing down voting sites, or standing scary looking people at the polls as "observers", or any of their regular tactics.

(15,100 posts)Oregon is pretty reliably blue, but we elected a Republican Secretary of State last time around. My congress critter, unfortunately, is a republican too. He is not running for reelection this time around (retiring), but his replacement is a right wing lunatic. but my little blue corner of the state is lumped in with the eastern half which is very Red.

(34,136 posts)Some places do it the first way, others the second. If the second, they give a week to ten days for the ballots to all arrive so they can be counted and results take much longer to be finalized.
If the ballots must arrive by election day, they are counted much sooner, basically at the same time the results from in person balloting are - if the state has in person voting.
I am not sure which is better. With the history of voting on election day and campaigning continuing until the day, a lot of people unused to vote by mail may be reluctant to fill out a ballot until the very end. With mail in ballots counted that are postmarked election day, they can do that with little possibility that their ballots would arrive too late to be counted.
In Florida, where I live, "the ballot must still be received by the Supervisor of Elections no later than 7 p.m. on Election Day if the voted ballot is to count. Exceptions exist for overseas military and civilian voters." (https://dos.myflorida.com/elections/for-voters/voting/vote-by-mail/)
Considering that I recently had a problem with delivery of a certified letter being delivered to an address a half a block from the PO branch where I posted it, I am not that sure that I would trust them delivering a ballot on time if I tried to mail it in less than a week before the deadline!
On the other hand, I have been voting during early voting periods since they began and generally vote a week before election day.

(15,100 posts)You can either mail (postage paid) your ballot or drop it off at one of many drop boxes in every county. There's a box just down the hill from my house. Postmark doesn't matter.

(34,136 posts)Since the PO doesn't not guarantee delivery dates.

(21,565 posts)then you add it to the election day totals
put all the ballots that show up on election day in a pile, and the states should be able to tell if they need to "hold up" until they are counted, or if they can declare a winner because the margin is much larger than the number of uncounted ballots.
