A lot of the mentality at the time was to give the Soviet Union their own version of Vietnam. And that was massively successful.

But like Iran and Cuba, it came back to bite us in the ass. Everyone was so enveloped in getting revenge against the communists for Vietnam, none of them stopped to think if they should in this case.

And in this case, they should have let the Soviets fully own this. As soon as we got our revenge, we bailed on them and ignored the civil war...as we didn't have a plan in place once the Soviets were repelled. We fucked up, big time. And shit, if the Soviets "pacified" the area....we may never had Bin Laden.

Add to the irony, we approved and encouraged Yeltsin's choice of VP, Vladmir Putin. A less than average KGB agent who became Mayor who seemed to hold very few ambitions. And the US thought they could "control" him, particularly after the loans the IMF gave to Yeltsin.

Putin paid those off ASAP and then began rebuilding the country with a huge ferocity. From becoming a token member of the G8 to an asshole regional power. And now, going tit for tat of old grievances.

From supporting blood thirsty dictators in Africa to South/Central America to Southeast Asia.

We created puppet governments, ignored human rights violations and even ignoring governments taking "socialists" in a plane and dropping them out in the middle of the ocean.

Granted the Soviet government was probably far worse....

....but it still doesn't make any of this "ok".

A couple of centuries from now, assuming we don't destroy ourselves, history is going to judge very harshly on the Cold War and aftermath.

suffering.

It's like idiots bringing up WWII in order to attack Japan or Germany right now . And same with other similar shit when they want to attack countries for something unrelated today.

If you want a discussion about these things then discuss it in itself.

Not as a distraction and excuse for fucked up things done now.

And especially not to distract for Trump and what he is doing as so called President.

We supplied and equipped the mujahedin that later morphed into al-Qaeda to kill Russians during their occupation. Let's not clutch our pearls when karma comes back around.

Good deal. My point remains, that we-- as a nation-- have no moral high ground here at all. And that has nothing to do with Trump.

We supplied their fathers, grandfathers and even great grandfathers with all kinds of toys 40 years ago as the Cold War was in its stretch run. They used those weapons to kill a lot of Russians. That’s very true.

Also true: It has fuck all to do with this.

Trump is trying to act like Russia is a friend of the US, to the point of trying to remove all sanctions that have been imposed for all the other things Russia has done. The issue here is Trump's response.

It's mentioned briefly in the article but the Brits must be pissed about the delay in sharing the information. Their troops were also targeted.

Prior to that Trump had been pushing for it over the objections of just about everyone around him, including Pence.
