Does he understand that real soldiers will face real danger? He did not seem to understand that, when he compared his wild reckless youth to military service in Vietnam. Is all of life a joke to him? We do not know which was the lie: when he said he was kidding, or when he said, "I do not kid." Maybe he doesn't know, either.
